Gould City
By Marilyn McNeil 477-6925 donmar@lighthouse.net

July has been a great month for festivities. It's nice to have time to enjoy the beautiful weather.

I've received news from the Feneley-McNeil-Nesbit American Legion Post 290 regarding its activities. The Post meets the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the VFW Hall in Engadine (except January, February, and March. During this time, regular meetings are held only as needed because of the weather.) Post 290 is in Zone 5, the Upper Peninsula, and the 11th District (Eastern U.P.). There are 115 members in the Post. The membership consists of eight members serving on active duty.

If you know friends who are veterans, or any veterans who would like to become members of the Engadine Post, let the Post Commander know and an application can be sent to them. Annual dues are $35, payable with the completed application form. Contact Commander Marv Germain at (906) 477-6370, First Vice Commander Cliff McMichael at (906) 477-9429, or Second Vice Commander Roger Shoemaker at (906) 477-6606 to receive an application.

Post 290 has many programs that help the local community, including scholarships, sponsorship of a Boy Scout troop, and fish fries with area volunteer fire departments at which both organizations split the proceeds. The Post has an "Adopt-a- Road" program, a Ladies Auxiliary, which meets separately, helps raise funds for other Posts, and participates in Fourth of July activities, Engadine Winterfest, Antique Showmobile Show, and supports the veterans home in Marquette, in addition to organizing monthly breakfast fundraisers and various raffles.

There will be a "Tri-County Volunteer Fire Departments" 30th Annual Fundraiser Saturday, July 21, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Highway 13 (15 miles south of M- 28 or 20 miles north of US-2). There will be auctions, raffles, drawings, homemade pies, refreshments, crafts, wood carving, and music.

The Germfask Fire Department "Community Day" will be Saturday, July 28, at the roadside park. There will be games, juice, popcorn, and clowns.

The Engadine Heritage Day activities will take place start Sunday, July 22, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Mill Pond Park in Engadine. Activities will be an antique car and tractor display, music, museum tours, and quilt show with raffle, plus arts and crafts. There will be food, including barbecue beef, hot dogs, and chips, with a strawberry social to follow. To display arts and crafts in the show, call (906) 477-6234. To enter cars and tractors, call (906) 477- 6898.

Newton Township has posted the dates of monthly township board meetings for the balance of 2007. They are as follows: August 8, September 12, October 10, November 14, and December 12. For 2008: January 9, February 13, March 12, April 9, May 14, and June 11. Meetings are in the Newton Township Hall on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. They are open to the public.

Engadine Methodist Church will host a church picnic in a beach setting Wednesday, July 25, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. This is the 15th free dinner offered to everyone in the community. The menu includes baked chicken, potato salad, and a 20-foot banana split, which will be served at 5:45 p.m. Children's water sports will be included. There also will be a fish pond full of prizes for the kids to fish in, a water slide, and giant bubbles.

Happy birthday to Jeff Keller July 23 and Carla Crawford July 24.

Happy wedding anniversary to Danny and Ginger Price July 24 and Kirt and Gretchen Grinnell July 25. Hope you all had a great day.

Stay safe and stay well. See you next week.
