The newly formed Brevort Township Community Foundation presented the Straits Area Sportsmen's Club with a $1,500 check Friday, July 13, to be used for the club's cormorant control and fish crib projects.
The money was generated by a silent auction at the first Brevort Lake Walleye Derby Saturday, June 2.
The derby was coordinated by a committee of Moran business people and members of the sportsmen's club, including Kirk and Julie Lipnitz, Helen and Theron King, Gary Reid, Louie Colegrove, and Jimmie Miller.
The committee operated under the umbrella of the Brevort Township Community Foundation, a fledgling project begun by Kirk and Julie Lipnitz of Moran.
The next foundation-initiated project will be a winter fishing derby, Mr. Lipnitz said. No date has been set.
The foundation is planning to write grants, hold more fundraisers, and it will invest all proceeds in the township, he said. Initial investments will benefit the lake. Later, the foundation hopes to add to downtown development projects in Moran, including such ideas as gas lights to illuminate and decorate the area, sidewalks, and a park.
