New Token Commemorates Bridge Engineer
Peter Jacobson, grandson of Dr. David Steinman, is presented with Mackinac Bridge photographs and commemorative tokens honoring his grandfather. An image of Dr. Steinman is on the new commuter token, and the reverse side marks the 50th anniversary of the bridge. Dr. Steinman was the designer and engineer of the bridge. He died three years after the bridge was built. He had earned honorary doctorate degrees from 18 universities before he designed the Mackinac Bridge, and was a designing or consulting engineer for construction of approximately 400 bridges on five continents. Dr. Steinman was also an author and a poet. The presentation was made at Bridge View Park in St. Ignace Thursday, July 27.
