Ben Hutchins

Ben A. Hutchins of St. Ignace served in the United States Air Force following high school graduation. He served as an air policeman and patrolman, was stationed in Greenland, and finally discharged from service in 1968. He worked several jobs in Detroit when he returned to Michigan after military service.

Mr. Hutchins was 63 when he died early Wednesday morning, July 25, 2007, at his home, of an apparent heart attack.

He was born July 21, 1944, in Cookeville, Tennessee, to Arthur and Cledith (nee Carr) Hutchins.

While he lived in Detroit, he worked as a claims investigator for an insurance company and retail credit card company. He also performed security work for Magnum Security company. He was a newspaper carrier for the Detroit News, Detroit Free Press, and New York Times for many years.

Mr. Hutchins was an avid Detroit Tigers baseball fan.

He married Marie Cadotte in St. Ignace August 1, 1975, and she survives him.

He is also survived by a son and his family, James and Toni Hutchins of St. Ignace, three grandchildren, Dean, Angel, and Shelby, and two sisters and their families, Alberta Davis of Florida and Juanita Dunn of Tennessee.

Mr. Hutchins was preceded in death by three brothers, Glenn, William, and Teddy, and by two sisters, Betty and Bernice.

Visitation was Sunday, July 29, at Dodson Funeral Home in St. Ignace.

Services were Monday, July 30, at the funeral home. Deacon Don Olmstead officiated.

Burial will be in St. Ignatius Cemetery in St. Ignace. The St. Ignace American Legion provided military rites at the cemetery.
