Brevort
By Lois Movalson 292-5581

It's only a few weeks before school starts.

Youngsters on the football teams are raising funds for their sports programs by selling chocolate bars and discount cards to St. Ignace businesses, an effort worthy of our support. The candy is good, and we'll take a 10% discount, too.

It was a warmer summer, and unfortunately, a dry one. We met some new people, Mike and Heather Hebner and their children, Ava and J.P., of Flushing. They have a condominium here in the village. We've made the acquaintance of Janet Binsfeld and her family, Sydney, Mike, and Dillon Croft of Harrison Township. Chris Binsfeld was unable to join them here this past weekend, as he was working. The Binsfelds own the former home of Michael and Helena Shepard on Schoolhouse Road. Sunday was Dillon's 15th birthday. Earlier this summer, our old friend, Betty Kaminsky, with her old classmate, Pat Barrett, of San Juan, Capistrano, dropped by. There were traveling from California to points east. Pat is the sister of Pudge Pechta.

Anne Hagen Anderson, Lynne Hagen VanDok, and Roger VanDok are at the family home for two weeks. First item on the agenda, of course, was a search for blueberries, which are few, and dried up. Roger is doing some serious biking, Anne is swimming in Lake Michigan, and Lynne is sitting back and observing, so far.

Dave and I enjoyed dinner and conversation with Don Dickmann and Kathleen McKevitte Thursday evening at their home. Kathleen and Don had garnered enough wild blueberries for a blueberry crisp for a tasty dessert.

Bob Flora's family visited over a long weekend, then departed for their homes. Hank Boots remained a few more days to help finish up a few things for Bob.

Kay Allott is visiting with Lorie Quigley this week. Lorie and Kay drove Joe Stewart to Flint Monday morning for a flight back to Fort Meyers, Florida. Joe will return at the end of the month. He worked very hard, and worked others, to turn the Quigley property into a virtual park.

Front porch visitors this week were Jackie Rippett, Kathleen McKevitte, Sally Conklin, Horst Daemmrich, Drew Laughlin, Anne Anderson, and Lynne VanDok.

Charlie Movalson and Andy Movalson were back again last weekend, angling for those walleyes on Big Brevoort Lake, with moderate success.

Janice and Sean O'Boyle hosted old college friends, the Hoffmeyers, from Mason. They all enjoyed seeing the meteor shower Sunday evening. Lawrence O'Boyle has just returned from a week at Camp Daggett on Loon Lake. This is the fifth year he and Louie Radecki have attended this camp, and Lawrence always says, "This is the best year yet."

On our morning walk, Dave and I stopped by Chapel Hill Motel to chat with Linda Gibb, who was walking her dog, Bud. Bud is sporting a new haircut called the Lion Cut, as he looks like a small, tawny-colored lion. So stylish.

A clarification: The couple who live on the corner of Worth Road and Schoolhouse, and who operate the book store, are Mary Carney and Warren Cunningham, not Mr. and Mrs. Carney.

On the way to Petoskey Monday morning, Sharon Chalmers dropped off the most recent book she has read, "A Thousand Splendid Suns," by the same author of "The Kite Flyer," Khaled Hosseini. A great read, says Sharon.

I called on Taffy Coffey Sunday afternoon at her home on US-2.

Carol Faye and John Watson will be leaving Tuesday for their home in Missouri. Carol says she has been away from those grandchildren too long.

Megan Gustafson is on her way back to Michigan State University in East Lansing to pursue her studies in pre-med.

Brenda Spencer is expecting a big load of hay to fill the barn for the winter. Grandson Toad is very excited to see the big truck coming to the Gypsy Rose Ranch.

Dave and I had a fish fry last week for the Quigley family, Candy Quigley, Herb Agee, Ross Houle (an extreme fish lover), Lorie Quigley, Joe Stewart, and Dave Jr.

Family members gathered at the home of Mark and Joan Spencer for a 50th birthday celebration for Mark Jr. Candy Humphrey was unable to attend the party, as her daughter, Jenny, was competing in a 4-H horse show in Traverse City. Matt Humphrey is planning to attend Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, where he will be enrolled in the criminal justice program.

Denny and Jackie Rippett organized a trip to the boat show in Hessel Saturday, August 11. A ferry transported the group from Mackinaw City to the Island for a brief stop, then on to Hessel for the boat show the rest of the afternoon. On the return trip, the ferry toured through the Island before docking at Mackinaw City. Those on the trip were Jim and Jerri Rose, Tom and Joyce Gustafson, Sharon and Ken Smith, Carol Faye and John Watson, and Gail and Charlie Lamoreaux, all of the Brevort area, Dot Glashaw of Epoufette, Dick and Carol Hardt of Berkley, and Jim and Joyce Palmer of Topinabee.

Sharon and Ken Smith entertained dinner guests at their home Sunday evening.

Happy birthday to Clair Kalbfleisch, Claris Snyder, and Shari Baron, all celebrating August 17.

Happy anniversary to Mike and Lara Gustafson August 17.

Pray for rain, especially in Newberry.
