Gould City At last we've had a slight break in the heat, and the threat of the wildfire near Newberry seems to be controlled. That was a scary few days for us all. We owe thanks to the brave firefighters who risked their lives to save our homes and surroundings. Saturday, August 11, the Gould City community laid to rest a longtime resident, Phyllis "Peggy" Keller. An obituary is printed in The St. Ignace News this week. She will be sadly missed by all her friends and family. The Naubinway-Engadine Merchants Association has scheduled its Fall Festival for Saturday, September 8, at the Pavilion in Naubinway. Tables are available for $15 each. To reserve space, or for more information, call Jackie at (906) 477-6432 or Ethel at (906) 477-6720. This year's theme for the cooking contest will be cheese recipes, so get out your favorite recipes. The Inwood Corn Roast and Raffle will be Sunday, August 19, from noon to 11 p.m. at the Inwood Township Fire Hall in Cooks. Bingo, games, a chicken barbecue, live music, a grand prize of a fourwheeler, and bicycle give-aways will be included. The Curtis Community Arts Council will sponsor a beginning weaving class, taught by Roberta Edmundson, at the Curtis Park Center Saturday, August 18, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, August 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost is $95. Call (906) 586-3251 to register. Music in the Park will feature "The Hummingbirds" Thursday, August 23, at 6:30 p.m. at Curtis Park. A community potluck picnic will be held during the concert. Music in the Park is sponsored by the Curtis Community Arts Council. Donations to benefit the council will be accepted. The annual Wild Blueberry Festival will take place at Paradise Friday, August 17, through Sunday, August 19. Events are held at the Whitefish Township Community Center and are sponsored by the Paradise Area Chamber of Commerce. A young vocalist, Hunter Buckingham of Germfask, is hoping to win a singing contest sponsored by an online talent showcase based in Las Vegas, Nevada. Hunter won the first round of the competition and is hoping to win the next one to put him in the top, where he can be noticed and perhaps get a chance at a singing career.
