The Sleeper Lakes fire, north of Newberry, is still in the news. The fire started Thursday, August 2, apparently by lightning. The last official report I received Monday, August 13, from Lori Underwood, who is a Department of Natural Resources land use specialist, said the fire size is at 18,483 acres with 50% containment. I was told by Ada Takacs of the DNR Forest, Mineral and Fire Management Division, that so far, this is the third largest wildfire in Michigan, the second largest in the Upper Peninsula.

The Engadine Historical Society Museums are open every Tuesday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you have been to the museums in the past, you will want to visit again to see newly added items.

The Newberry Eagles Club will hold a fish fry Friday, August 17, from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the club on M-28 in Newberry.

The Hulbert American Legion Post 393 will have a fish fry at the post Friday, August 17, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Engadine VFW and Auxiliary 8382 will have a fish fry Friday, August 17, from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Cost is $8 for adults, $3 for children younger than age 12, and children younger than age 5 are admitted free.

Stop by the Tahquamenon Area Library during public hours to check out the "Poetry Tree" and to cast your vote for your favorite tree photograph. Sixteen photographs were submitted, making for a beautiful display. Winners will be announced in early September. Call (906) 293-5214 for more information regarding the contest.
