DeTour Area
By Barbara Buschbacher 297-8075 bbann@sault.com

It is hard to believe that the last long summer weekend, Labor Day, is right around the corner. It is sad to watch the boats being put away until next summer. The last few days of August seem to have a touch of fall in the morning and evening hours. Activities in the area do not end after the Labor Day weekend. September is the start of a busy schedule for all schools and sports programs.

Good luck to the DeTour Raiders volleyball team. The team's program is already underway, with their second game at Pickford Thursday, August 30. Coach Sara Galarowic is optimistic in rebuilding the team after losing eight players last year. The 2007 team members are Kiah Barbeaux, Amanda Papke, Koring Goetz, Sabrina Tomlinson, Shelby Thomas, Jessica McClellen, Laura Fussman, Morgan Fierek, and Jessica Bouwma. Plan to attend the games to give them all our support. What can be more fulfilling to the players than to see the bleachers crowded with fans?

The cross county team is coached by Matt Peterson. Team members are Jeff Albridge, Thomas Worden, Chase Livingston, Ashley Lapoint, Laura Fussman, Teryn Miller, Nathan Klamerus, Devin Livingston, Paul Stocking, and Max Peterson. We are proud of our fine young athletes. To all DeTour area school students, we wish them a wonderful 2007- 2008 school year.

The DeTour Passage Historical Museum will hold the annual Community Appreciation day this Thursday, August 30, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Refreshments will be served. There are new additions to the museum that you may want to view.

The Summer's End concert will be held at the DeTour Cultural Center, formerly Sacred Heart Hall, Sunday, September 2, at 3 p.m. The concert will feature Susan Askwith and Dave Stanaway from Sault Ste. Marie performing "Songs of the Shore - Sailing the Elva from St. Ignace to Sault Ste. Marie." The museum will have on display a replica of the Elva at the reception following the performance.

The weekend of Friday, September 14, and Saturday, September 15, will be a busy time in the village. The performance of "Tales of Twain," directed by David Rhinard, will be held Friday and Saturday at the DeTour Cultural Center. Friday evening will be dinner theater. Playing the role of Mark Twain is DeTour's own Roger Norton.

The fifth annual Happy Apple Saturday will be September 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in DeTour Village. There will be barrels of free apples at all participants' doors. There will be activities throughout the day, for all ages. There will be an apple pie baking contest, an apple pie eating contest, an open marketplace, a 50/50 raffle, artists' booths, fishing for prizes, live music, children's storytelling, apple toss, elephant ears, baked apples, face painting, outdoor barbecue lunch, and scarecrow contest. To end the day, music to dance by will be provided by Fast Eddie & His Blues from Marquette.

This year, a section of downtown will be closed off to accommodate artisans and various crafters and retailers. There is no charge to participate. Set up is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. To secure a spot, call Annalee at (906) 297- 5165, Cathy at (906) 297-6461, or Barb at (906) 297-5999.

Fast approaching is the seventh annual Bob-O Classic planned for Saturday, September 1, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at "The Rock" on Drummond Island. All proceeds go to the Bobby Classer Memorial Scholarship Fund at DeTour High School.

For more information, contact Lenda or Alex Fisher at (906) 297-2101.

News from our friends and neighbors of Caribou Lake: Three new families were introduced and welcomed to Caribou Lake at the July association meeting. They are John and Goldy Brady, Dave and Mary Lou Dowell, and Glen Merkel.

An election of officers was held, with the following results: President, Jeff Hiney; vice-president, David Kurtis; treasurer, Dianne Karsh; secretary, Joan McCloud; newsletter editor, Carole Hiney. Trustees are Jack Pitko, Jim Pitko, Scott Lucy, Steve Tyler, and Joe Matazinskas. The next meeting will be Saturday, September 1, at Jim Pitko's Linger Longer Resort. The meeting will be called to order at 7 p.m., with a social hour following.

Lou Kurtis' collection of money to buy fish to stock the lake has been successful to date. The Kashers have put in two checks. A permanent donation post is being constructed and will be placed on Hineys' property facing the boat launch.

Food for thought: It's an extra special occasion these days if it's celebrated by staying home for dinner.
