Engadine
By Julie Freeman 477-6959 engadinenews@sbcglobal.net

It's hard to believe summer vacation has come to an end. We've enjoyed our summer.

Please do something extra special this weekend with your kids, because school starts in Engadine and Newberry Tuesday, September 4.

There will be an all-you-caneat pancake brunch Saturday, September 1, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Curtis Community Building.

Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Pancakes, sausage, eggs, potatoes, orange juice, and coffee will be served. Proceeds will benefit Curtis Park Erickson Center.

Don't miss the eighth annual Fall Festival Saturday, September 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pavilion in Naubinway.

There will be arts and crafts, food booths, 50/50 drawing, farmer's market, and children's activities and games, featuring a new candy walk. It's sure to be a fun time for the whole family. Make your favorite cheese recipe and bring it in by 1 p.m. for judging.

This year's recipe contest is "cheese." Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place. Local artists barns auctions, with beautifully decorated lighthouse will be on display and available for sale by a silent auction from noon to 3 p.m. The Naubinway Fall Festival is sponsored by the Naubinway-Engadine Merchants Association.

Art on the Lake is having its eighth annual art and music festival, featuring exhibits from more than 75 artists, at the Curtis Park Saturday, September 1, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. There will be live entertainment, food tent, and Finn and Fern parade, featuring the magical 12-foot-high puppets at 3 p.m. There also will be a silent auction of hand-painted chairs, children's art tent with free, hands-on wearable art projects for your child, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Firefighters from the Sleeper Lakes fire north of Newberry were sent to Mile Alley Road as part of the initial attack team. This fire was located northwest of the village of Engadine, in an area that had previously been part of a timber sale on private land. The fire began in logging slash Monday, August 27, when winds quickly pushed it toward a cedar stand. Usually this works to our advantage, since cedar grows in wet areas and can help slow the fire, giving firefighters an advantage. Because of the drought, the fire burned through the cedar and was stopped as it exited the other side.

Happy birthday to Darcy King, Shannon Slack, Ed Bryant, Randy Petrowski, and our son, Travis Freeman, August 30, Vikki Perry, Tim Vallier, and Jarrett Dailey August 31, Natasha King September 1, Lindsey Bell, Abigail Miller, and Renee Sullivan September 2, Joe Perry Jr., Mary Frazier, Hugh Chaffin, and Shannon Leveille September 3, Sandy Livermore and Nathanael Miller September 4, John (Casey) Ketcher September 5, and Andrew Davis and Mary Germain September 6.

Happy anniversary to John and Linda Buckholz September 1, Andrew and Mary Ocko September 2, Arnold and Julie Bell September 3, Butch and Carla Crawford September 4, Merle and Bob Edwards September 5, and Stu and Barb Hobbs and Chuck and Sue Butkovich September 6.

As I'm writing this, we're getting a thunderstorm with rain. Hopefully, this rain will be enough to put a damper on all the fires in the area.

Condolences to the family of Alan Morrison, who passed away Wednesday, August 22, in Newberry, while under the care of his family, friends, and Northwoods Home Health and Hospice.

He will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Enjoy a safe and happy Labor Day Monday, September 3.

Until next time, take care.
