Brevort Front porch guests this week for wine and cheese and Dave's smoked fish were Sharon and Joe Chalmers, Lorie Quigley, Don Dickmann and Kathleen McKevitt, Horst and Ingrid Daemmrich, Jackie and Denny Rippett, and Tom and Taffy Coffey. Matriarch Marion Green's family has converged on the Green family cottage on Lake Michigan this week. Anita Graham of Seymour, Tennessee, Chris and Wendy and their children, Jake, Rachael, and Paige, Andy and Vivian Green and their daughters, Amanda and Lindsey, all of New Hudson, and Glen and Claudia Wiseman of South Lyon make up the group. Five dogs of various breeds and sizes are also in the mix. Tracy Movalson and "Chippy" are home from Neenah, Wisconsin, for a week's visit. Mary Carney is busy harvesting her garden and canning, canning, canning. An author, Clayton Klein, who is making the walk from Paradise to Hell, Michigan, stopped by her bookstore for a signing. His latest book, "The Well Kept Secret," is a compilation of his deceased wife's diaries. Mr. Klein is a hale and hearty 88 years old, and an avid walker. When you are a guest at Trinity Lutheran Church for Sunday morning worship, you never know what opportunities might arise. We had visitors from the Door Peninsula in Wisconsin. During a conversation after service, Shari Baron decided they should just come home with her and Ray to their home on the Pine River, and walk the Mackinac Bridge the next morning, and so they did. Tracy got their address, as their home is not all that far from hers in Neenah. Joe and Sharon Chalmers motored to Escanaba Saturday to celebrate their wedding anniversary. They enjoyed dinner at a restaurant, and roamed the mall. Monday morning, Sharon and I commiserated over the Tiger baseball game with the A's. Tigers lost, if you don't already know. Sharon offered this saying up, "You just don't cry in baseball." Dave and I did our maintenance stint at the Hope Chest resale store in St. Ignace. Connie Litzner and Donna Pope were helping to lead the Good Will semi-truck with items not used for the Hope Chest resale store. It is disheartening to observe the trash some people are leaving at the back door. Hope Chest has to pay for all the trash to be removed. Please take trash to the transfer station on Cheeseman Road; don't leave it at the resale store. After their volunteer work at Hope Chest Wednesday, Jackie Rippett and Joyce Gustafson lunched in St. Ignace. There they met Lorie Quigley and Kay Allot enjoying a day of shopping. Sally Conklin and Jackie Rippett journeyed to St. Ignace to attend Arts Dockside. Ms. Rippett purchased a little wooden chair for a doll and a nice sun catcher featuring the upper and lower peninsulas. They stopped by my front porch to show me their purchases. Barb and Owen Jorgenson entertained Bob Flora for dinner this past week. As with many families living in Brevort, the Jorgensons have had continuous streams of company this summer, but Barb and I agree it is great fun. Sharon Smith and Pega Kennedy attended the 50th anniversary party on Saturday for Gary and Marlene Olsen of St. Ignace. Megan Gustafson was home for the weekend from her studies at Michigan State University. John and Pega Kennedy, along with Ken and Sharon Smith, enjoyed an evening with Jeff and Pat Cranson aboard their boat. They spent the afternoon at the harbor in Mackinac Island and then docked in Mackinaw City for dinner. Bea and John Zak have returned home to Painsville, Ohio, after a week in the area. Joining them were Bea's daughter, Julie Kosar, and her friend, Matt Mead, from California. Julie showed Matt the beautiful attractions that our area has to offer, including Mackinac Island, Cut River Bridge, and Split Rock. Of all these, Matt liked Split Rock the best. He took Julie there and they both climbed to the top of the rock. There he proposed to Julie, and she said yes. Hidden behind a tree was a picnic lunch prepared by Matt's future mother-in-law and her relatives. It was complete with champagne and candles. Bea and her family had first cleaned up around the rock before Matt and Julie arrived. Joe Stewart has arrived home on Shore Road and he and Lorie Quigley entertained Jim and Barb Popour and family for breakfast Monday morning. The Popours are from Sault Ste. Marie. Kathy Reid's sister and a friend, Jean and Dennis, spent the weekend with Kathy and Bob at their home on Worth Road. Jean and Dennis had an exhibit of ceramics and gourds at Arts Dockside. Brett Mitchell, formerly of Brevort and St. Ignace, has been promoted to captain at American Eagle Airlines out of O'Hare International Airport in Chicago. Mr. Mitchell was one of those kids who spent part of his childhood in Brevort, along with siblings Kim, Heather, Scott, and Tobey, and their parents, Ron and Carol Mitchell. Happy belated birthday to Bob Jarzynka August 27. |
