DeTour Area
By Barbara Buschbacher 297-8075 bbann@sault.com

Labor Day is the last day of summer, unofficially, the only time pedestrians are allowed to walk the Mighty Mac, and, for some, a day to sit back, relax, and wonder where the summer went. Hope your holiday was a great one. Do not put away your patio furniture or outdoor grill just yet, as there are still warm, sunny days ahead.

Linda and Alex Fisher were excited to report this year's Bob-O Classic, held at the Rock Saturday, September 1, was most successful. They expressed their appreciation to all of the 78 golfers enlisted to play 18 holes. The Fishers reported that $6,000 was raised toward the Bobby Glasser Scholarship Fund for DeTour High students.

Golfers placing first were Berry O'Connor and Tyler Anderson. Second place went to Gary Sr. and Gary Jr. Cloudman. Mike Wasnich and his son, Craig Wasnich, came in third. Congratulations to all.

Coming up soon is the production of "Tales of Twain" with DeTour's own Roger Norton starring as Mark Twain, directed by David Rhinard. The play will be presented Friday, September 14, Saturday, September 15, and Sunday, September 16 at the Fine Arts Cultural Center. Other cast members acting out some of Twain's memories are Dr. Richard Morrison of Pickford, R.B. Smith of Cedarville, Dan Harris of Sault Ste. Marie, Bob Zaharias, RuthAnn Hudak, Rene Norton, and Susie Rhinard, all of DeTour. Youngsters from DeTour are Amber Mandrell as Becky Thatcher, Devin Livingston as Tom Sawyer, and Kaden Barbeaux as Huck Finn. "The Tales of Twain" will also play at the Soo Theater September 21 and 22 at 7:30 p.m.

The fifth annual Happy Apple Saturday will be held in DeTour Village Saturday, September 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be an Apple Pie Baking Contest inside the Dockside Cafe. Bring your apple pie recipe to the Cafe by 11 a.m. Saturday morning. The winner will receive a prize which includes a gift basket and gift certificates. Celebrity judges will select the winner. Judging takes place at noon. An Apple Pie Eating Contest will take place at the Fogcutter Bar and Grille. Sign up before the event. Many more Happy Apple Day activities are planned in town that day, as published in this space last week. A list of the days events are available at the Garage, Dockside Cafe, and North Country Sports.

Food for thought: He who hesitates gets leftovers.
