John 'Norm' Burton

John "Norm" Burton of Manistique began working as a carpenter, then later owned and operated several businesses in the Wayne area. He was the owner and proprietor of a gasoline and service station, a fuel oil delivery service, and a lawn mower and bicycle sales and repair service. He spent quite a bit of time in the Gould City area with his extended family. Mr. Burton was 96 when he died August 29, 2007, at his residence.

He was born December 28, 1910, in Germfask to George and Rachel (nee Millen) Burton, and he attended school there.

October 20, 1934, he married the former Margaret E. Marsden in Ann Arbor. They lived in Inkster until 1978, and later moved to Honor. Mrs. Burton preceded him in death February 15, 2000.

Mr. Burton moved from Honor to Manistique in August 2000.

He was a member of the Methodist Church in Inkster, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Mr. Burton is survived by a son and his family, Seymour and Eloise Staley of Hillsdale; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and his close relatives, William Burton and Rachel McNeil of Gould City, whom he visited often.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Juanita Burton, three brothers, William Burton, Telford "Tuffy" Burton, and Arthur Burton, and two sisters, Mable Stevenson and Pauline McAlpine.

Visitation was Saturday, September 1, at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. A funeral followed and the Reverend Don Bedwell officiated.

Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 6, in the Cadillac Memorial Gardens West Cemetery in Westland.
