Carl Huffman Carl Huffman of Manistique was a Great Lakes sailor, working the past 24 years for the American Steamship Line, and 10 years before that for the Steinbrenner group under the late Captain Ray I. McGrath of St. Ignace. Mr. Huffman died at the age of 56 Sunday morning, September 2, 2007, while aboard American Steamship's M/V H. Lee White, near Port Oregon in Toledo, Ohio. He was born at a lumber camp near Hessel August 30, 1951, to Joseph and Eva (nee Lee) Huffman. He served in the United States Army in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971, and he is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Manistique. Mr. Huffman's greatest love was his family and grandchildren. While he was off the ship, he enjoyed working in his garage, and recently built a large generator. He married Phyllis Paquin December 30, 1972, at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in St. Ignace. Mr. Huffman is survived by his wife, Phyllis; a daughter and her family, Nichole and Jason Veroni of Cheboygan; siblings and their families, Jim and Betty Huffman, Don and Tash Huffman, Ron and Dorothy Huffman, William Huffman, Dorothy Currie, and Midge Gugin, all of Hessel, and Chuck and Debbie Huffman of Moran; three granddaughters, Katelynn, Carley, and Hope Veroni; his mother- and father-in-law, Bernard and Vi Paquin of St. Ignace; several brothers-in-law and sistersin law, Tom and Theresa Paquin, Mike and Janet Paquin, Kevin and Amy Paquin, Gerry and Darin Brow, and Christina Paquin, all of St. Ignace, Ron and Brenda Nelson of Escanaba, Kathy and Bill Bauman of Manistique, and Ken and Mary Paquin of San Diego, California, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Alice Huffman; his parents; a son, B.J. Huffman June 30, 2002; two brothers, Robert and Joseph Huffman, and two brothersin law, Robert Currie and Cookie Gugin. Friends may call at Dodson Funeral Home in St. Ignace Thursday, September 6, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with parish prayers at 8 p.m. AMass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, September 7, at 11 a.m. at United Methodist Church in St. Ignace. All St. Ignatius Masses are being celebrated at the Methodist Church while St. Ignatius is being renovated. Father Allen Mott and Deacon Don Olmstead will officiate the service for Mr. Huffman. Burial will be in St. Ignatius Cemetery in St. Ignace, next to his son. Pallbearers will be Mr. Huffman's brothers and brothersin law. Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace assisted the family with arrangements. |
