Gould City
By Marilyn McNeil 477-6925 donmar@lighthouse.net

September has brought us a lot of rain, but also some beautiful weather. The leaves are starting to show a little color, and the winds are a little more chilly than they were last month.

One good thing is that the Sleeper Lakes fire is reported to be 95% contained. Thank goodness for that. We are all so thankful for all the volunteers who came from all over the country to put the fire out and keep us safe. We bless them for their hard work.

The annual Harvest Moon Ball is scheduled for Friday, October 12, at the Hiawatha Sportsmen's Club in Engadine. Tickets are $35 per person and can be purchased from Curtis Chamber of Commerce, Curtis Service, and Chamberlin's Ole Forest Inn. Music will be provided by Doc Woodward's Band.

The Curtis Area Chamber of Commerce will host a Fall Outside Decorating Contest this month. To participate, enter by calling the Chamber office at (906) 586-3700, then decorate your front yard or business. The winner will be announced at Oktoberfest.

Oktoberfest will be Saturday, September 29, from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Main Street in Curtis. The event will feature music by Lislie Cook, as well as Storm Front. There will be homemade German food by Weber's Rustic Inn and Upper Peninsula-brewed beer. Other events include a soup cookoff and children's and adult games. For more information, call the Curtis Area Chamber of Commerce at (906) 586-3700.

The artwork of Jan Smith, from McMillan, is on display at the Curtis Park Center, and can be viewed during Wellness Center hours through September.

Everyone is invited to the free meal Wednesday, September 26, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Engadine. Takeout will be available at no charge. The evening will be topped off with a hayride at 5:30 p.m.

We send our condolences to the family of Edward "Tuff" Marshall, who passed away January 11, 2007, near his home in California. He was born in Gould City to Charles and Bessie Marshall. Edward served in World War II and was awarded the Silver Star.

When he retired from the U.S. Army, he and his family moved to Southern California, and later settled in San Luis Obispo. His brother, Chuck Marshall, resides in Gould City. Graveside services will be held Saturday, September 22, at 11:30 a.m. at the Lakeside Cemetery in Manistique.

Happy birthday to Chris Keller September 24, Betty Stansbury September 25, Anabel Grinnell September 26, Krystle Troyer September 27, and Carl Gribbell September 30. Hope you all have a great day.

Happy anniversary to Chad and Tracy Germain September 21.

Good luck to Hunter Buckingham of Germfask, as he enters yet another round in the singing contest, to make his way to the finals in Las Vegas, Nevada, the end of this month. This community is pulling for you.

Stay safe and stay well. See you all next week.
