6 Candidates Seek Council Seats in St. Ignace Nov. 6

Six candidates will be running for three open seats on St. Ignace City Council in the November 6 election.

Incumbents Merv Wyse, Willie LaLonde, and Paul Fullerton will seek reelection for another fouryear term, while Dean Baker, Mary Elizabeth Nichols, and Steve "Frenchy" DuFresne will also seek the seats.

Mr. Fullerton was elected to Council in August 2006, filling the remainder of then-Councilman Paul Grondin's term, who was elected as mayor in March 2006.

Both Mr. Baker and Mr. DuFresne were candidates in the March election for mayor.

Mr. DuFresne also vied for a council seat against Mr. Fullerton.

Mr. Baker served on council from 1989 to 1993 and was a member of the city's Zoning Board of Appeals.

Ms. Nichols is a newcomer to the political arena, although she has been an active participant in city discussions at City Council meetings. She also volunteers for the Mackinac County Community Action Agency's Meals on Wheels program, which provides meals to senior citizens in the area.

Those who are interested in running can apply as a write-in candidate. The deadline for submitting a declaration of intent is 4 p.m. Friday, October 26.
