Brevort Our lovely weather continues here in the village. While taking one of our autumn drives, we made the acquaintance of Dave and Charlotte DeShetler, who are building their retirement home on Wildwood Lane east of Brevort. Mr. and Mrs. DeShetler lived downstate, then retired to Florida and traveled around the country in their RV. Mr. DeShetler has family history going back a couple of generations in Seney, at the hunting camp. They have had the Wildwood property since 1978, thinking it would be a nice place to build overlooking Lake Michigan, and they do have a great view of the lake. They plan on being here six months and then going to warmer climates during the winter. We welcome them to the community. Tony and Rosie Masson were home in east Brevort for the weekend. Bob Flora traveled to Tecumseh with Bill and Sue Kanour to visit Ann and John Ryan for the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Ryan will bring Mr. Flora back up north, via Muskegon, to visit relatives there. While driving around in the woods this weekend, we met a cousin, Mike Gustafson, and his grandson, Tyler Barthelemy, just driving around, too. Larry First called on Dave Movalson this week to discuss the upcoming bow hunting season. Kristi Gustafson has joined the Steel Drum Band at LaSalle. Mike, Lara, Kristi, and Morgan attended the homecoming festivities Friday, September 21. Brevort's Erin Barthelemy was a member of the court, and looked lovely, as did all of the participants. The boys were handsome. New faces at the Smoked Fish are Darcy Bigelow and Angel Dishaw, both of Epoufette. Kyle O'Boyle is working there on weekends. When you make a new dessert that serves 12, you would be wise to invite 10 people to enjoy it with you, especially when it is a decadent almond cheesecake. Sitting around our table Thursday evening were Denny and Jackie Rippett, Ellen and Bob Barry, Sue and Bill Kanour, Bob Flora, Dave Movalson Jr., and Terry and Fred Green. Tom Gustafson is busy trapping varmints in his back yard. This time it is the dastardly raccoon family that has set up a household in an old culvert. Karl and his daughter, Lauren, came out to Brevort with the fourwheeler and invited Morgan Gustafson to go with them to check out the deer blind. Kristi Gustafson joined Papa and Grammy Gustafson on their four-wheeler for a ride through the woods north of the village. Brian and Jeanne Rose's family cat, Roscoe, passed away a few weeks ago. He was old and will be missed. This week, the Roses got a new kitten from Jo and George Ford. He is black and white and goes by the name of Otis. Jerri Rose and I attended the Jewels of the Straits Red Hat meeting at the home of Arlene Eby. A business meeting was conducted concerning the 2008 Red Hat Convention in St. Ignace. Light snacks and good conversation were enjoyed by all. Mark and Joan Spencer's house on Worth Road was struck by lightning last week. Mrs. Spencer said the sound was deafening and the flash of light was intense. She was reading at 3:30 a.m. when this happened. The fuses were knocked out in Mr. Spencer's workshop. Denny and Jackie Rippett spent the weekend in Hancock and Calumet with their granddaughter, Kara Sokol. Ms. Sokol is the acting director of the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce. The color was at peak, they said, and the popular Brockway Drive was truly beautiful in its robes of orange, red, and yellow. Joe Matelski and Mort Becker were Monday morning coffee drinkers with Dave Movalson. Trooper Ken Smith said he was privileged to fly Senator John McCain to Mackinac Island for the Republican gathering last week. Does this warm weather portend another mild winter? We wait and see. Enjoy while we can. |
