Red Cross Offers Disaster Classes

The American Red Cross will offer volunteer training classes in Newberry at the Youth Activities Center, Friday, October 19, and Saturday, October 20. These classes are free to the public.

A"Fulfilling our Mission" class will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. October 19. AMass Care class will be from 9 a.m. to noon, followed by "Introduction to Shelter Operations" from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. October 20.

Marcia Varble of the Northern Lower Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross will teach the classes. Lunch will be provided on Saturday.

As a result of the Sleeper Lakes wildfire, many people have asked about becoming Red Cross volunteers, the agency reported. During this disaster, many volunteers within the community were called upon to staff the canteen that provided food for firefighters and to set up a shelter.

Class size is limited. To register, contact Mary Archambeau at (906) 293-3729.

The Youth Activities Center is at 103 Main Street.
