Voters To Consider Three Issues in Tuesday Election Election Day is Tuesday, November 6. Voters will be asked to consider a millage request to fund special education services, as well as a millage request in the Engadine Consolidated Schools District, and in St. Ignace, they will be asked to choose three City Council members from among a slate of six candidates. The mayor is running for reelection unopposed. Polls will be open Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. A new regulation this year requires voters to show photo identification at the polls. City of St. Ignace Candidates vying to fill three, four-year seats on City Council are Dean Baker, Mary Elizabeth Nichols, Steve "Frenchy" DuFresne, and incumbents Willie LaLonde, Merv Wyse, and Paul Fullerton. Mayor Paul Grondin is also running unopposed for a second twoyear term. Candidates' responses to a series of questions of voter interest were published in The St. Ignace News October 11. Engadine Consolidated Schools District To repair heaters, lighting fixtures, exterior brick, and install new windows at the Engadine Consolidated Schools building, the school district will ask voters for two mills for two years, which will raise $294,340 a year, as reported in The St. Ignace News October 25. The money is strictly designated for repairs to the school, and cannot be used to pay salaries or for other operational expenses. Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District The intermediate school district is asking voters to consider an increase of 0.75 mills for three years for special education funds. The $1.4 million in new funding generated every year would be distributed to the local schools that provide special education. Distribution to districts would range from $3,700 to as much as $445,000, depending on the level of special education services each school provides and the number of students needing care, the EUPISD reported in an article in The St. Ignace News October 25. If the millage passes, the ISD will levy a total 1.52 mills for special education. |
