Veterans Day Events
Planned in Our Local Communities

Veterans Day Sunday, November 11, marks the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, when World War I ended. Veterans of all wars are honored on that day. The following services are planned to observe Veterans Day in local communities:

St. Ignace

A Veterans Day assembly will take place Monday, November 12, at 10 a.m. in the middle school gymnasium to honor area veterans. Seventh grade students will serve as greeters and escort veterans to their seats. The U.S. Coast Guard will present the colors. A kindergarten student will lead everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Veterans are invited to stay for a spaghetti luncheon following the program.

Les Cheneaux

There will be a program Thursday, November 8, at 10:15 a.m. in the high school gymnasium. The program will include a guest speaker, readings by students, and the school band playing patriotic music. All area veterans and the public are invited.

Pickford

American Legion Post 323 of Pickford and the Raber Am Vets will host a public assembly at the high school gymnasium Friday, November 9, at 10:45 a.m. This year's assembly will focus on paying tribute to prisoners of war (POW) and missing in action (MIA) soldiers. Local veterans are encouraged to attend to present the colors and represent their service.

Winners of an essay contest will be announced at the assembly. Students were asked to write letters to POWs and MIAs. The first place winner will receive $100, and the second place winner will receive $50 from the American Legion.

Engadine

Students will recognize veterans Friday, November 9, at 2 p.m. in the gymnasium at Engadine Consolidated Schools. The band will provide patriotic music, and students will read essays about patriotism and honoring veterans.

Veterans and the public are invited to attend.

Rudyard

Elementary students at Turner- Howson School are making a Veterans Wall to honor those who have served. Students can bring in pictures of family members who are veterans for display on the wall.

Mackinac Island A Veterans Day service will be held at the Mackinac Island school Monday, November 12, at 2 p.m. Students will participate by singing songs.

Veterans and the public are welcome to attend.

Mackinaw City

The American Legion will host a Veterans Day potluck dinner Sunday, November 11, at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Post, located at 106 South Huron Street.

Members and guests are asked to bring a dish to pass and tableware.
