Ralph David Black Jr., 62, of Drummond Island, died Tuesday, October 30, 2007, at his home.
He was born January 21, 1945, to Ralph and Grace Anna (nee Nelson) Black in Buchanan.
He moved to Drummond Island when he was seven years old. After earning his GED at DeTour High School, he began working at the Drummond Island Dolomite Quarry until he retired in 1982.
Mr. Black married his wife, Nancy (nee Anderson) Black, July 21, 1973, at the Drummond Lighthouse Church.
He was a member of the Drummond Island Moose Lodge, an usher and deacon at the Lighthouse Christian Church, and volunteered for a year distributing food with Community Action. Mr. Black enjoyed hunting, fishing, collecting hats and caps, and working on lawn mowers to increase their power. He was always a willing worker when someone needed a helping hand, friends said.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his son, Ralph Curtis Black III of Gaylord; his daughter and her family, April and Matt Muxlow of Lansing; and his grandson, Tyler Black of Chino Hills, California. He is also survived by his mother, Grace; his sisters and their families, Mary and Gary Smith of PawPaw, Carol Gutzman of Largo, Florida, Shirley and James Thompson IV of St. Cloud, Florida, Hope Carter of Kinross, and Faith Hartley of Emmet, and his brother, James Black of Gladstone.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph, and his brother, Robert Black.
A memorial service in his honor was held Friday, November 2, at 1 p.m. at the Lighthouse Christian Church on Drummond Island with Pastor Lyle Kelley officiating.
