Doris Beach

Doris Beach
Doris E. Beach, 97, of Cedarville, was known for designing artistic plant and flower creations at her Cedarville store, The Home Craft Shop, and was a historian of the Les Cheneaux Islands. She died Friday, November 2, 2007, at Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace.

She was born March 30, 1910, in Cedarville to John W. and Eliza (nee Hodeck) Beach.

She lived most of her life in Cedarville. She was graduated from high school in Escanaba, and then traveled to Ambler, Pennsylvania, where she was graduated from a two-year program at The School of Horticulture for Women.

She returned to Cedarville, where for 28 years, she owned and operated The Home Craft Shop, located near Islington Road. In her shop, she sold many of the flowers that she grew, and many of the artistic items she created, for example, her pinecone owls. She loved being in the woods cutting boughs; and in her store, she also featured Christmas greens that she shipped to customers around the country.

She was a member of the First Union Church of Cedarville and hosted regular prayer meetings in her home. Ms. Beach was one of the most knowledgeable area historians, friends said, and she had scrapbooks and slides containing historical information about the development of the Les Cheneaux area as well as its wildflower habitat. She developed an appreciation for nature, wildflowers, animals, and water, and had a special love for the Les Cheneaux Islands.

She is survived by her niece, Meredith Beach Fountain of Cedarville, 12 great-nieces and great-nephews, and by her dear friends, Bob and Sharon Smith. For the last few years, she was lovingly cared for at Belonga Adult Foster Care Home in Moran.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Adelaide Hudgins and Eleanor Beach, and by one brother, Howard Beach.

A memorial service was Monday, November 5, at 1 p.m. at the First Union Church in Cedarville with the Reverend Jeffrey Meyers officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Cemetery in Cedarville.

Memorials may be directed to the First Union Church Missionary Fund, P.O. Box 426, Cedarville, Michigan 49719.

Reamer Galer Funeral Home of Pickford assisted the family with arrangements.
