Bertha Gilbert Bertha Irene Gilbert, 94, of Drummond Island, died Thursday, November 8, 2007, at her home. She was born in 1913 in Kinross Township to Frank and Hylma (nee Aho) Marsell. She grew up on Drummond Island and was graduated from Sault High School. She moved to Dearborn, where she met and married Stanley Charles Gilbert December 24, 1935. Mrs. Gilbert loved vacationing on Drummond Island with her family. After Mr. Gilbert retired in 1971, they moved back to Drummond Island onto property they had owned since 1968. She loved to cook and work crossword puzzles. Mrs. Gilbert was known for her sharp wit and good sense of humor. She was also a painter, using pastels, watercolors, acrylics, and oils. She was a member of the Drummond Island Lutheran Church and the Dearborn Artists Guild. Mrs. Gilbert is survived by her sons and their families, Robert and Patricia Gilbert of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and Richard and Jacque Gilbert of White Lake; her daughter, Sue Gilbert of Drummond Island; eight grandchildren and their families, 15 great-grandchildren and their families, and three great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Helen Laakso, of St. Ignace. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters, Gertrude Griffin and Lillian Anderson, a brother, Vernon Jarvinen, and an infant son. A memorial service for Mrs. Gilbert will be held Friday, November 16, at 11 a.m. at the Drummond Island Lutheran Church with Deacon Charles Krahnke officiating. A luncheon will follow the service at noon at the Drummond Island Township Hall. Memorial contributions may be made to the Drummond Island Lutheran Church, Drummond Island Ambulance, or the Chippewa County Hospice. Reamer Galer Funeral Home of Pickford assisted the family with arrangements. |
