By Miriam Blair 643-7994

The Flyers, sponsored by Great Lakes Air of St. Ignace, includes (from left) Alex France, Hunter Frazier, Sam Fullerton, and Kody Rickley. The team took second place at a 3-on-3 hockey tournament in Cheboygan Saturday, September 29.
Faith Baptist Church was among those honoring veterans November 11, followed by the church's Harvest Dinner.

Our sympathy goes out to the John Thibault family. Mr. Thibault, 98, a lifetime resident of St. Ignace, passed away Saturday, November 10, and was well known by everyone for his sense of humor. He lived life to its fullest.

Chris Tamlyn, comic book illustrator from St. Ignace, is working on his second illustrated anthology, to be called "Attack of the Monster-thology," and hopes to have the book published in June 2008. His first anthology, for which he was the design coordinator, was released in August. It features 11 short stories inspired by Saturday morning cartoons, created by many artists, including Mr. Tamlyn. Good luck, Chris. We'll be watching for your next creation!

Barry Pierson made a brief appearance on an HBO sports documentary on the college football rivalry between the Michigan Wolverines and the Ohio State Buckeyes Thursday, November 15, which was repeated until Saturday, November 17.

The documentary showed clips of his historic performance against Ohio State University during a regular season game in 1969, in which he recorded three interceptions and returned a punt 60 yards to help Michigan to a 24-12 victory over the number-one-ranked team in the country at the time. Unfortunately, the lore of Michigan's past glory was not allowed another chapter, at least not this year, as the Buckeyes prevailed with a 14-3 win Saturday, November 17.

Joe Bellant and Nick Schlehuber, both enlisted in the United States Air Force, were deployed to Afghanistan Thursday, November 15. They will serve one year overseas. Mr. Bellant was stationed in Germany and Mr. Schlehuber was stationed at Scott Air Force Base near St. Louis, Missouri. They spent a few weeks together at an Air Force base in the state of Washington before being shipped out. Good luck, boys, and God bless.

St. Ignace residents Jake Grogan, Caleb Grogan, and Alex Belonga will leave for Lafayette, Louisiana, Monday, November 26, to begin work with the largest boat-lifting company in the United States. They will be working on supply tugs in the Gulf of Mexico. All three are certified Merchant Marines.

Nineteen Head Start students from the Mackinac County Community Action Agency took a brief field trip to Central Savings Bank in St. Ignace Tuesday, November 13. Bank tellers Jodi Misner and Shelly Elliott showed the three-and-four year-olds the bank's safety-deposit boxes, currency counter, and coin machine, and provided them with popcorn.

"We had fun having them there," Mrs. Misner said.

Contributions of new toys and monetary donations for children's Christmas presents are being accepted at The St. Ignace News office for Toys for Tots. All donations will be given to local children. Donation canisters are also set up in St. Ignace gas stations and businesses to collect for the effort.

Among hunting camps of the U.P., Frank Stempki's is "Camp Road Kill." Their motto is, to hit them, you come and get them! His wife, Lana, reports that they've had no luck yet. Friends and family join each year; some are only part-time, and other guys take it more seriously. Of course, they take time out for a hot dish at the Fraser Camp nearby. Raymond Dennis of Grand Rapids and his two sons, Greg Moore, along with Ed VanNotte, Randy and Dusty Stempki, Fred Strich, and Tim Matelski take part. After 10 days of hunting in Canada, David Becker tackled a 10-pointer, but still joined the guys.

The Home for the Holidays parade will be next Friday evening, November 30, in St. Ignace.

Birthday greetings to Peter Crystal November 25, Mike Massey November 26, and Amy Calcaterra November 28. I finally will catch up in age to my classmates November 27 - but I'm still younger. Thirty-five of us live in St. Ignace, out of our graduating class of 103. (I'll let you guess the year.)

Belated birthday wishes to David Litzner November 17.
