Gould City

My favorite time of the year is Thanksgiving. I wait each year for that once-in-a-year delicious meal that someone cooks. Usually it's me, but this year, with no one here but me and my husband, I'm hopeful that it's going to be someone who does it professionally. I'm scanning the advertisements, looking for the best dinner I can find. I know that it's going to be hard to decide.

The VFW Post 4420 Women's Auxiliary is inviting anyone interested to join them for Thanksgiving dinner Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22, beginning at 1 p.m. and serving until the food runs out. The Post is on Maple Street in Manistique. A freewill offering will be accepted, but no one will be turned away even if a donation is not made. If possible, it would help if you can call ahead of time to make sure they have enough seats. Call (906) 341-6793 to let them know you're dining with them, and also to make arrangements for a ride if you need one.

Chamberlin's Ole Forest Inn, in Curtis, is holding a silent auction of holiday wreaths, centerpieces, table-top trees, and gift baskets Saturday, November 24, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. There is a $15 per person donation, and all proceeds will benefit the Curtis Community Arts Council. For more information, call Kelly Chamberlin at (906) 586-6006.

Don't forget the Cards and Boxes for Service Members Project. The holidays are getting closer, and time to sign all those cards for the servicemen is running out. Contact Sherry Nutt at (906) 346-6971, or write to her at the following address: 442 Mustang Street, Gwinn, Michigan 49841. Checks should be made out to American Legion Post 301 (Cards for Troops Project). Our service members need to know we support them, and that they are not forgotten. Ms. Nutt's goal is 45,000 cards, and she is almost halfway there. She says, "God Bless you and America," and sends her thanks to you for helping and supporting our servicemen and women.

The Schoolcraft County Chamber of Commerce is holding a Christmas raffle. First prize is a handmade full-size quilt, second prize is an original holiday painting, and third prize is a handmade tree skirt. The drawing will be Monday, December 10, at 3 p.m. during the Ambassadors Open House at the Chamber office on US-2. Tickets are also available from any Ambassador Club member or at the Chamber office.

Curtis is holding the 16th Annual Bazaar Saturday, November 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Portage Township Hall and the Curtis elementary school. There will be arts, crafts, gifts, decorations, bake sale, pictures with Santa at the school, a Christmas basket raffle, lunch at the township hall, and the Ladies Aid quilt raffle and drawing. They have an unlimited number of tables available for merchandise displays; call (906) 586-3700 to reserve a space.

The John T. Bouchard Eagles, Aerie 3701 will host a blind auction and spaghetti dinner Saturday, November 24, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Eagles Club on M-28. Proceeds will benefit and offset expenses for six-month-old Allie Lewis, a leukemia patient. Donations for the auction can be dropped off at the Eagles Club after 3 p.m., or you may call (906) 293-8674 to arrange drop-off.

The Eagles have also announced that there is a change in their meeting night from Wednesday, November 21, to Wednesday, November 28, at 6 p.m. Members are asked to attend this meeting, so they can help decorate the club for Christmas. For questions, call the club at (906) 293- 8674.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Bless you all!

See you next week.
