Saints Grapplers Post Perfect Record at Rudyard Brawl

The St. Ignace Saints wrestling squad posted the only undefeated record (5-0) among 10 teams during the Rudyard Bridge Brawl Invitational Friday, December 14.

The tournament format featured five teams from the Upper and Lower Peninsulas that included the host Bulldogs, the Saints, Norway Knights, Newberry Indians, and Manistique Emeralds, and from the Lower Peninsula, Alpena Wildcats, Frankfort Panthers, Charlevoix Rayders, Mancelona Ironmen, and Cheboygan Chiefs.

St. Ignace won the U.P. title and Alpena the Lower Peninsula crown, with a 4-1 record overall on the day.

"We are jelling as a team and have wrestled extremely well," said Saints Head Coach Harvey Bentley.

The Saints opened with a 50-26 win over Cheboygan, followed by a 71-6 decision against Mancelona, 43-28 over Alpena, 78-3 against Frankfort, and closed the tourney with a 57-22 decision over Charlevoix. St. Ignace scored 299 points for a 59.8 average and allowed 85 points for a 17.0 average.

Saints individual wrestlers registered a 54-16 record with 28 pins in the 70 matches, as six wrestlers notched perfect records.

Nate Tamlyn, wrestling in the 171-pound category, recorded a 5- 0 record with five pins during the Saints' win at the Rudyard Bridge Brawl Friday, December 14.
The Saints will travel to Rogers City to face the host Hurons and the Onaway Cardinals in a tri-meet Wednesday, December 19.

After the holiday break, the Saints will host Sault Ste. Marie and Mancelona, Thursday, January 3, and the junior varsity will travel to Gaylord for a meet Saturday, January 5.
