Congressman Stephenson on Tuesday last secured recognition and called up the bill to reimburse Thomas Chambers of Mackinac Island for money due him for carrying mail from Mackinaw to the Soo, but Butler, of Iowa, objected to consideration and laid the bill aside indefinitely.

LaGrippe has appeared again in this vicinity. Several cases are reported in the city and also at Mackinaw City.

The good sleighing and delightful moonlight evenings of late have brought out the merry sleigh-ride parties in numbers.

R.F. Berdie, formerly of St. Ignace and Newberry, and well known in Cheboygan, has built a three-story hotel in the new town of McKinley Range. - Cheboygan News

Is St. Ignace to have an ice skating rink? There seems to be some talk of it now.

The str. St. Ignace is now running both her forward and rear engines. The ice and rough weather lately is the cause.

Miss Kittie Dolan's school in Gros Cap closed Saturday last, and she is home enjoying the holiday vacation.

The week of February 4 was set aside by the department of justice Monday for registration of the half million unnaturalized Germans in the Continental United States by police and postmasters is pursuance of President Wilson's alien enemy proclamation, directing this action as a means of minimizing the danger from enemy sympathizers in the United States.

F.W. Shaver, who by reasons of the changes in the Jones Kerry Co., has severed his connection with that industry, announces that he expects to operate his shingle mill during the coming season on a much larger scale than ever and will soon be in the market for sufficient timber for a year's run.

Five years after the war is over, there will be a "United States of the world," with Woodrow Wilson as president.

This is the belief of C.A. Bowsher, head of the Cleveland school of the University of the World.

January 1st D.A. Brotherton ceased his connections with the board of county road commissioners.

Richard Jones is now the sole owner of the plant of the Jones Kerry Co., which includes the mill and equipment, tugs, booms, and everything pertaining to the operation of the big mill, one of the best outfitted in the peninsula.

Members of the Mackinac Island coast guard came across from the island Tuesday on their way to New York, where they will go on duty on the Atlantic seaboard.

Alex Shoberg's wood machine is kept busy these days in the Snows, keeping old man chill away.

Thursday, January 2, 1958

Adequate access to St. Ignace from the Mackinac Bridge developed as a principal issue for discussion Monday morning when representatives of the Arnold Transit Company, City of St. Ignace, and Chamber of Commerce undertook a study of economic possibilities of the future.

Mackinac county's board of commissioners will convene in their January session at the courthouse here next Monday, and likely will discuss plans for a proposed airport improvement and expansion, and the report of the committee which has been studying a new jail and sheriff's residence in Mackinac county.

St. Ignace came real close to having a green Christmas this season. Despite an afternoon grass fire, three inches of snow fell before the day was out, bringing joy to the hearts of the youngsters.

Lenore Goodheart, city clerk at Mackinac Island, announces this week that nominating petitions for candidates for office at the spring election are now available.

Snowmobile problems took precedence over regular agenda items in Monday's City Council meeting as Nick Lupan appeared before Council asking some action to curb illegal snowmobile operation in his neighborhood, which is on the route to the State Park area.

Leading scorers for the Michigan Huron Shores Conference in boys basketball are Ed Lester of St. Ignace with a 22.8 scoring average, and Mike Davies of Petoskey with a 22.6 scoring average.

Margaret Doud has filed for her 19th term as Mackinac Island mayor.

Post offices in Moran, Mackinac

Island, Drummond Island, Goetzville, Cheboygan, and Barbeau

may remain without postmasters for at least two or three months.

Owing to last fall's massive restructuring effort by Postmaster General Marvin Runyon, five of these six area post offices lost their postmasters to an early retirement incentive, which opened up more than 40,000 postal positions from labor and management ranks nationwide.
