Ironworkers Walk of Fame Proposed at Mackinaw City
Would Feature Commemorative Bricks
      A privately-funded Mackinaw City promenade to celebrate the contributions of ironworkers was enthusiastically embraced by the village council Thursday, January 17, and sent to the planning commission. Marilyn McFarland unveiled her plans for the landscaped public sidewalks as a way to recognize ironworkers throughout the country and boost tourism in Mackinaw City.

Huron Halts Service as Straits Ice Closes In
     Creeping through thickening ice in Moran Bay, the Huron made its last trip to Mackinac Island from St. Ignace Saturday, January 19. The final sailing off the Island was at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. With temperatures hovering in the single digits through the weekend, by Monday morning the ferry was locked in ice at her mooring in St. Ignace at Arnold Transit Company's Dock One. The Arnold Line's freight boat, Corsair, which leaves from Dock 3, may continue to run with no set schedule, depending on ice. Ferry operations are expected to resume when the ice breaks, usually between mid-March and early April. Travel to and from the Island is available at the Mackinac County Airport.

Anglers Are Ready for Jamboree
Pickford
      The annual Walleye Jamboree on Munuscong Bay will award $600 to the angler who catches the largest walleye in the four-day fishing tournament. The event will start at midnight Thursday, January 24, and continue through noon Sunday, January 27. The weigh-in tent and Sunday awards ceremony will be at Dan's Cabins and Resort on Munuscong Bay.

      Upper Peninsula parolees can finally get jobs, housing, counseling, and education before they rejoin society under the statewide Prisoner Reentry Initiative that was expanded to the U.P. in October.

Mackinaw City Winterfest Draws Crowd of 200+
     Despite frigid weather, a crowd of more than 200 people cheers on the Wee Wee Tee Pee as it slides toward the finish line during the third annual outhouse race at Winterfest in Mackinaw City Saturday, January 19. Taking second place, the team ran the 500-foot track in 14.5 seconds. Pictured (not in order) are team members Jon Cooley, Norman Windsor, Abe Brown, Samantha Cooley, and Mat Ruhl. All are from Mackinaw City, except Mr. Ruhl, who lives in Tecumseh. Miss Cooley is inside the outhouse. The outhouse was sponsored by Tee Pee Campgrounds in Mackinaw City.

      Mackinac County township representatives seemed satisfied by the roads selected for work over the next five years as they met with Mackinac County Road Commission and Road Commission Manager Karrie Abbitt Tuesday night, January 15.

     Two St. Ignace elementary fourth grade students, Natalee Lee (left) and Mackenzie Arthur, were among those to brave the cold temperatures and enjoy an afternoon of tubing at Doc Holle's Silver Mountain Sunday, January 20. Temperatures hovered near zero that day.

300 in Attendance for Annual Ice Follies
      An estimated 300 people were entertained by figure skaters in the third annual Ice Follices show at Little Bear East Ice Arena in St. Ignace Sunday, January 20. The fundraiser raised between $800 and $900 to benefit prevention programs for child abuse and neglect in Mackinac County. Total revenue, before expenses, was more than $1,200.

$7,200 To Bring Food Trucks To EUPArea
      The Pickford Chapter of Family, Community, and Career Leaders of America (FCCLA) has set its sights on feeding as many as 400 local families, and will host a February 1 "Dress Down Day" for local businesses to raise money. Members of the organization need to raise $7,200 to bring a Feed the Children delivery truck to the Eastern Upper Peninsula.

County Web Site To Be Redesigned
      A new Web site for Mackinac County is expected to be completed in about two months. It will contain general county information and resources and eventually could include election results and property assessment information. An older site at the same address, www.mackinaccounty.

Project Hope Building Closed; Food Needs Available Through Hotline
      The Hope Chest resale shop and St. Ignace Food Pantry are closed until further notice owing to renovations at the building on Ferry Lane in St. Ignace, Connie Litzner of the Hope Chest told The St. Ignace News February 16. Those who have emergency food needs can make arrangements to obtain food by calling the Project Hope hotline at 643-6780.
