Snowmobile Poker Run Takes on New Format
Run Begins Saturday Morning at St. Ignace
      The Straits Area Snowmobile Club's poker run, which starts in St. Ignace Saturday, February 16, will have a new and more active format for participants. Those who participate will no longer just collect playing cards for the best poker hand, they will be required to perform certain tasks to earn multiple playing cards at each stop they make.

Elusive Walleye To Be Top Target at Moran
Brevort Lake Jamboree Is This Weekend
      One tagged walleye has been eluding fishermen since last summer's Walleye Derby in Brevort Lake. Fishermen participating in the inaugural Brevort Lake Ice Fishing Jamboree Saturday, February 16, and Sunday, February 17, will get another chance at bagging the elusive prize, along with another tagged walleye, to win a new snowmobile or a $2,500 lumber package.

Columns Replaced on Colonial House Inn
     Top: The four front porch columns on the Colonial House Inn in St. Ignace are being replaced by Marshall Builders, owing to wood rot. The inn, built in the mid- 1800s, is expected to be open by March, said owner Chris Green. She is also redecorating the inn's former gift shop, on the north side of the building, as a gathering room for groups. Ms. Green said the room should be ready by summer. The threestory building includes seven Victorian rooms. A 10-room motel is connected on the south side.

Snow X Snowmobile Action Designed To Thrill Spectators This Weekend
      The Kewadin Shores Casinos and St. Ignace Snow X Race will be Saturday, February 16, and Sunday, February 17. The races are a part of the 2008 Michigan Snow X Series. Spectator tickets are $10 per day or $15 for a weekend pass. There is no admission fee for children ages six and younger.

Fishing Derby Planned on Caribou Lake
      The DeTour Hunt and Fish Club will host a fishing contest on Caribou Lake Saturday, February 16, and Sunday, February 17. The registration fee is $10. Fishing will take place from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. to noon Sunday.

      A news article on page 12 of the February 7 issue reported that a local petition drive is underway to establish a veterans medical clinic in Cheboygan. The article incorrectly suggested that if it's established, veterans may be able to seek surgery in Cheboygan, while in fact, veterans could seek initial treatment in Cheboygan, but they would go to Ann Arbor for surgery.

Hope Chest Will Reopen Friday
      The Hope Chest resale store in St. Ignace will reopen Friday, February 15, at 10 a.m., said volunteer Connie Litzner. Mackinac Bridge Traffic Down 9%
      Traffic crossing the Mackinac Bridge in January decreased 9% when compared to January 2007, the Mackinac Bridge Authority reported February 8. Last month, 180,895 vehicles crossed the bridge, compared to 198,878 in January 2007.

25 Hikers Celebrate National Winter Trail Days
      Twenty-five people hiked the North Country Trail between M- 123 and Worth Road Saturday, January 12, to celebrate the 13th annual National Winter Trails Day. Two families skied in to the Carp River Bridge, said event coordinator Kay Kujawa, while a group of five on snowshoes made their way from Worth Road into the new Silver Creek Bridge.

Chippewa County Sheriff Investigates Breaking/Entering
      The Chippewa County Sheriff's Department is investigating a breaking and entering at the Varsity Grill on West Main Street in Rudyard. During the early morning hours of Thursday, January 24, the restaurant was broken into and an undisclosed amount of cash and a Toshiba laptop computer valued at more than $600 were stolen.

Moran Township Considers Closing Brevort Voting Precinct; Sets Public Meeting for Feb. 19
      A voting precinct may be closed in the village of Brevort owing to the difficulty of finding election inspectors and rising election costs, the Moran Township Board of Trustees reported at its meeting Wednesday, February 6. If the precinct is closed, Brevort residents will have to travel more than 20 miles to Moran Township Hall to vote, or vote by absentee ballot.

      The St. Ignace community is invited to Lenten worship at various churches throughout February and March. Every Wednesday gathering begins with a potluck meal at 6:30 p.m. and worship at 7:15 p.m. Offerings will go toward health kits to help refugees around the world.

Clark Township's Five-year Recreation Plan Will Be Presented in March
      Clark Township's new recreation plan will be presented to the public in March, and if adopted, will be in place through 2012. It is the first new recreation plan in five years. Five-year recreation plans are required by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources from communities applying for Trust Fund grants.

Gros Cap School To Repay Enbridge Energy for Taxes
      Gros Cap School will have to repay $88,000 to Enbridge Energy to settle a claim that the company was overtaxed on its property in the township, and the school will also have to pay about $7,000 to Edison Sault Electric Company for the same reason, members of the Moran Township Board of Education learned Monday, January 21.

Clark Township Approves Recreation Dept. Fundraiser
      The Clark Township Board of Trustees unanimously approved a calendar project to raise money for its recreation department and park development. At a Monday, January 28, special meeting, trustees allocated $5,700 from the township's recreation fund for printing and promotion and the Clark Township Recreation Committee will raise additional money for the project.

Organ Transplant Group Meets Feb. 14
      The next Organ Transplant Support Group meeting will be Thursday, February 14, at 6 p.m. in the conference room in the Professional Medical Building behind Otsego Memorial Hospital at 825 North Center in Gaylord. This meeting is open to all interested parties. If Gaylord schools are closed because of bad weather, the meeting will be automatically canceled.
