Saints Take Charge Early in Parents' Night Win Over Bulldogs

The St. Ignace Saints girls basketball team took charge early during a 60-37 Straits Area Conference win over the Rudyard Bulldogs in front a parents night crowd at LaSalle High School Thursday, February 7. It took overtime play for the Saints to down the Brimley Bays Tuesday, February 5.

Saints Post SAC Win

The win kept the Saints' (7-2 in SAC, 13-5 overall) conference hopes alive. Sault Ste. Marie (8-1) is one game ahead of St. Ignace and Cheboygan for the league title.

The Bulldogs fell to 3-6 in the league and 5-13 on the season.

The Saints and Bulldogs played to a 5-5 score at the 4:35 mark of the first eight minutes before St. Ignace outscored Rudyard 21-3 to take a 26-8 advantage, increasing the halftime lead to 40-14 with a 14-6 scoring run in the second quarter. Marcie Rickley scored nine points and Amanda Coveyou added eight for the Saints during the run. Emily Jeffreys and Erin Jarvie each scored six for the Bulldogs.

Rudyard held a 23-20 scoring edge in the second half as Jeffreys responded with 12 points in the third and fourth quarters combined.

Saints Outlast Bays in

Overtime

The Saints' Nicole Elmblad tied the score at 52 with eight seconds on the clock to force overtime against the Bays Tuesday, and the freshman scored eight points in the extra four-minute period to clinch the win for St. Ignace.

Saints JV Posts Wins

The St. Ignace junior varsity team defeated Rudyard 37-31 and Brimley 42-39.

The Saints added three girls to their roster for the remainder of the season.

"The three girls have been a positive factor for the team," said Saints Varsity Coach Dorene Ingalls.

Three Victories

The Cedarville Trojans recorded three non-conference victories during the week with a 50-36 win over the Escanaba Eskymos Thursday, February 7, the Rogers City Hurons 68-30 Tuesday, February 5, and the Posen Vikings 68- 33 Monday, February 4.

With Road Win

The Trojans, 17-1 on the season, trailed 9-8 after the first eight minutes before outscoring Escanaba 19-11 in the second quarter for a 27-20-halftime lead, and held a 23-16 scoring advantage in the second half.

Balanced scoring was the key in the home win over Rogers City. The Trojans led 41-13 at halftime and outscored the Hurons 47-17 in the second half to post the win.

Pickford Girls Down

Eagles, Bulldogs

The Pickford Panthers girls basketball team defeated the Engadine Eagles 47-37 during an Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference (EUPC) contest Thursday, February 7, and downed the Rudyard Bulldogs 68-48 in a non-league match-up Wednesday, February 6.

Panthers Upend Eagles

Pickford (4-3 in the EUPC and 9-9 overall) trailed 11-5 after the first eight minutes against Engadine before outscoring the Eagles 32-10 in the combined second and third quarter for a 37- 21 advantage.

The Eagles (3-5 in the league) closed the final score to 10 points with a 16-10 margin in the final eight minutes.

"We have played solid basketball during the past week," said Panthers Coach Becky Arbic.

Rebounding was a key facotor as Pickford downed Rudyard in the non-league contest. The Panthers recorded 49 rebounds among seven players and took a 21-9 lead after the first eight minutes. Pickford increased the lead to 43-26 at halftime, with a 22-16 scoring advantage, and outscored Rudyard 25-22 in the second half.

The Engadine Eagles girls basketball team defeated the Rapid River Rockets 67-27 Tuesday, February 5.

"We played one of our best games of the season," said Eagles Coach Daryl Browning.

The championship game is at 7 p.m. Friday, February 22.

All Games 7 p.m. Pickford and Brimley will open play Monday, February 18, and Cedarville and DeTour will play Wednesday, February 20.

Engadine Posts Three Victories

The Engadine Eagles boys basketball team earned non-conference wins over the Mackinaw City Comets 70-32 Monday, February 4, Rapid River Rockets 62-59 Tuesday, February 5, and won an Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference decision over the Pickford Panthers 60-57 Friday, February 8.

"This was our best week of the season," said Eagles Coach Elmer Albright. "We played well as a team at both ends of the court in all three games."

Eagles Control Comets

Engadine controlled Mackinaw City from the opening tip with a 19- 9 lead after the first eight minutes, outscoring the Comets 20-6 in the second quarter for a 39-15-halftime advantage, and held a 31-17 second half advantage.

The Eagles defense held as Mackinaw City scored in double figures, while Engadine had four players with 10 or more points.

Engadine led 19-8 after the first eight minutes and held on for a three-point win over a possible district tournament opponent.

"Rapid River is always a tough match-up," added Albright.

Engadine led 15-13 after the first eight minutes, but trailed 25-24 at halftime after Pickford held a 12-9 scoring edge in the second quarter.

Pickford is 3-4 in the EUPC and 4-14 overall.

The Eagles outscored the Panthers 22-8 in the third quarter for a 46-33 lead, before Pickford cut the final margin to three points with a 24-14 advantage in the final eight minutes.

Mackinaw City Boys Tied

in NLC After Two Wins

The Mackinaw City Comets boys basketball team tied for first place in the Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) after league wins over the Ellsworth Lancers 61-44 Wednesday, February 6, and Alba 77-54 Friday, February 8.

The Comets and Lancers are 10-1 in the NLC standings. Mackinaw City has league games with Boyne Falls, Alanson, and Alba, while Ellsworth will battle Wolverine, Harbor Light Christian, and Boyne Falls.

"The title is in our hands as we must win out to at least have a share of the conference championship," said Comets Coach Garth Law. "We played very well against a good Ellsworth team and, against Alba, we were shorthanded with Logan Paquet injured and sitting the bench, but Barry Paquet and Nick Dullack stepped up to score career high in points."

Ellsworth led 11-10 after the first eight minutes before both teams scored 12 points in the second quarter for a 23-22 halftime score.

The host Comets opened a 39- 32 lead after the third quarter with a 17-9 scoring advantage. Adam Alexander hit a triple to end the quarter and Mackinaw City answered with a 22-2 scoring run to begin the final eight minutes to clinch the key league win.

Score Career High in Win

Barry Paquet (32 points) and Nick Dullack (16 points) scored career-highs during the win over Alba as Mackinaw City was without the services of its leading scorer, Logan Paquet.

The Comets led 19-13 after the first eight minutes and held a 21- 16-scoring edge in the second quarter for a 40-29 halftime advantage.

Mackinaw City continued its offensive assault with a 22-13 scoring run in the third quarter and closed out the league contest with a 15-12 score.

Willie Vieau scored 27 points and grabbed 19 rebounds to lead Mackinaw City to a 41-35 win over Alba in the junior varsity game.
