Four-year-old Jacob Dorenbecker of Brevort Lake holds up the catches from his tip-up poles, a pike and a perch. His 0.56- pound perch took first place in the children's category at the Brevort Lake Jamboree February 16 and 17. He was fishing with his father, Craig Dorenbecker. Sunny days, and the evenings are growing longer.

Erin Patti, a senior at LaSalle High School, was the recipient of a $25 check as an essay contest winner. Miss Patti is the daughter of Rachel Coveyou and the granddaughter of John Coveyou. The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Elders Advisory Board offered the contest for students, titled "What Elders Mean to Me."

Jim St. Louis, chief of police in Midland, has announced his retirement from a law enforcement career that began in 1973. Mr. St. Louis grew up in St. Ignace and is the son of Mary Jane and the late Stanley St. Louis. His wife is Cheryl St. Louis.

Mr. St. Louis has worked as a federal officer with the U.S. General Services Administration, Farmington Hills Police Depart- \ment, and the public service director for Manistique and Greenville. He has worked as a patrol officer, a detective, and a specialist in juvenile investigations. Mr. St. Louis has also served as president of the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police, among many other accomplishments. He'll continue working after his retirement, in leadership and management training.

The two are 1994 graduates of LaSalle High School. Both played for the Woodpecker Heads in Saturday's outdoor tournament at Driftwood Sports Bar. The Jewels of the Straits Red Hat Society will host a bake sale Saturday, March 15, beginning at 9 a.m. at Glen's Market in St. Ignace, Sharon Laako reports. Proceeds will benefit the Red Hat Society convention in town in June.

Movie night at the St. Ignace Public Library Thursday, March 13, will feature "Snow Buddies" at 6:15 p.m. Movies and popcorn are free of charge.

Pat Andress of St. Ignace was the guest of honor at his 75th birthday celebration Saturday, February 16, hosted for family and friends by his children at the Village Inn. Belated birthday greetings to Molly Matthews and to Ian Welch, who celebrated his 18th birthday February 28. Happy birthday to Gail Huskey and Jay Caldwell March 17.
