Erin Patti, a senior at LaSalle High School, was the recipient of a $25 check as an essay contest winner. Miss Patti is the daughter of Rachel Coveyou and the granddaughter of John Coveyou. The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Elders Advisory Board offered the contest for students, titled "What Elders Mean to Me."

Jim St. Louis, chief of police in Midland, has announced his retirement from a law enforcement career that began in 1973. Mr. St. Louis grew up in St. Ignace and is the son of Mary Jane and the late Stanley St. Louis. His wife is Cheryl St. Louis.

Mr. St. Louis has worked as a federal officer with the U.S. General Services Administration, Farmington Hills Police Depart- \ment, and the public service director for Manistique and Greenville. He has worked as a patrol officer, a detective, and a specialist in juvenile investigations. Mr. St. Louis has also served as president of the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police, among many other accomplishments. He'll continue working after his retirement, in leadership and management training.

The Jewels of the Straits Red Hat Society will host a bake sale Saturday, March 15, beginning at 9 a.m. at Glen's Market in St. Ignace, Sharon Laako reports. Proceeds will benefit the Red Hat Society convention in town in June.

Movie night at the St. Ignace Public Library Thursday, March 13, will feature "Snow Buddies" at 6:15 p.m. Movies and popcorn are free of charge.
