Trojans Hold off Superior Central 92-76 for Regional Title

Cedarville's Winning Streak Reaches 50

The Cedarville Trojans boys basketball team won the Class D regionals with a 92-76 victory against the Superior Central Cougars Wednesday, March 5, in St. Ignace. The Cedarville Trojans boys basketball team held off the Superior Central Cougars to capture its third consecutive regional championship and earn its 50th consecutive win over two seasons with a 92-76 victory at LaSalle High School in St. Ignace Wednesday, March 5.

The quarterfinals game in Escanaba Tuesday, March 11, pitting Cedarville (24-0) against the Ewen-Trout Creek Panthers (25-0) of the Porcupine Mountain Conference, was played after press time. Results of that game will be in next week's issue.

"I was pleased with the way our players responded, as Superior Central came out and played very well," said Trojans Coach David Duncan. "Every team will come ready to play us, and we need to pick up our intensity."

Cedarville raced out to an 8-0 lead at the 6:44 mark before Superior Central settled in and sliced the Trojans' lead to 12-11 with 3:16 remaining in the first quarter.

Kevin Thompson, who scored 13 points in the first eight minutes, helped lift Cedarville to a 23-17 advantage.

Jason Duncan, who scored 11 points in the second quarter, converted a three-point play to open the period, to help Cedarville hold a 28-21 lead. The Trojans tallied six consecutive points for a 34-21 lead. Cedarville took a 48-33 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was a chess match as the Trojans and Cougars traded points, as both teams scored 24. Cedarville led 72-57 going into the final quarter.

Superior Central continued to play hard, but the Cougars were unable crack the Trojans' defense as Cedarville held a 20-19 scoring edge in the final eight minutes, earning a trip to the quarterfinals in Escanaba.

Cedarville recorded 34 field goals, one triple, and made 22 for 33 from the free throw line. Superior Central made 24 field goals, four triples, and made 24 of 27 from the free throw line.

Cougars statistics: Ethan Richmond, 26 points; Ben Richard, 16 points; Justin Chartier, 15 points; Christian Vitale, eight points; Kyle Maki, six points; Arleigh Johnson, three points.
