6 Teams in Action for 2nd Annual Broomball Tourney

The Mackinac Grille team won the second annual St. Ignace BroomBowl tournament, which was played in the Driftwood Sports Bar parking lot Saturday, March 8, by beating Quality Inn 7-3 in the championship game. Six teams and 60 people competed in the second annual St. Ignace BroomBowl at the Driftwood Sports Bar parking lot Saturday, March 8. The event raised about $1,000 for the St. Ignace City Recreation Department to purchase sports equipment for public use.

Mackinac Grille won the tournament, defeating Quality Inn 7-3 in the championship.

Both teams went undefeated in their two regular games. The Grille defeated Dan Arnold's Woodpecker Heads to advance to the championship game, while Dave Goldthorpe's Quality Inn team beat the Driftwood team in the second semifinals game.

Other teams were Willie's Warriors, captained by Willie LaLonde of St. Ignace, and Ryan Schlehuber's Puddle Bacon. Willie's Warriors beat Puddle Bacon 2-0 in the consolation game.

Wade Huskey of St. Ignace volunteered to build the field, constructing walls of snow four feet high. The field was maintained by Mark Sposito and Dave Goldthorpe using a snowmobile and a metal drag.

Ed Paquin, Bob Lee, Les Therrian, Dean O'Brien, and Mr. Sposito volunteered to officiate the games. The two goalie nets, made out of snow fence and wood, were constructed by Todd Insley and Chris Paquin.

The tournament was coordinated by Mr. Schlehuber, with assistance from Mr. Sposito and the city's Recreation Department.
