County Seeks Legal Advice on Hospital Debt, Millage
      An agreement must be reached between Mackinac County and the Mackinac Straits Hospital Authority over what to do with a county millage levied for the hospital, continued payment of the $1.3 million debt on the hospital mortgage, and the future of the hospital buildings and property.

Youth Discuss City Issues With Council
      One year ago, when the St. Ignace City Council met at the LaSalle High School, the agenda and questions asked by the students were similar those at this year's meeting, which was held in the school cafeteria Monday afternoon, March 17.

Road Commission Cuts Workforce by 30 Percent
      A shrinking budget and short road construction list is forcing the Mackinac County Road Commission to reduce its workforce by 30%. Eight seasonal employees will be laid off March 28, and commissioners have no plans to call them back for the summer construction season.

County Interviews Four Treasurer Candidates
      Four candidates are being considered for the 35-week appointment to serve as interim county treasurer. The appointment committee will interview the applicants Thursday, March 20. All interviews will be open to the public. To be interviewed are Nora Massey, Walter J. Murray Jr., and Robert Winkelman, all of St. Ignace, and LeRoy Pieri of Cedarville.

Mackinaw City OKs New Rates
      Residents of Mackinaw City will receive higher water and sewer bills this June. The village council approved a rate increase plan developed by Village Manager Jeff Lawson, which charges the highest volume users 20¢ more per gallon than the lowest volume users.

Conservationists File Suit for Dragonfly Protection
Hiawatha National Forest Near St. Ignace
      Conservation groups have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, seeking continued protection of the endangered Hine's emerald dragonfly on the Hiawatha National Forest near St. Ignace.

      For the more than 14,500 passengers who climb in and out of planes at the Mackinac Island Airport each year, working their way through the terminal's bottlenecked entry will now be a thing of the past.

Road Commission Seeks Federal Funding for 16 Projects
      At the Tuesday, March 11, Mackinac County Road Commission meeting, Manager Karrie Abbitt described 16 projects she will seek federal funding for, including 14 safety projects and two High Risk Rural Roads projects. If awarded, the money would be available for the 2009 construction season.

Survey Results, New Strategies To Be Focus of EAB Meeting
      Researchers across the country will be looking to St. Ignace and Moran, where new strategies will be implemented to stop the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) this spring and summer. Those strategies, including local survey results and quarantine regulations, will be discussed by scientists at a public meeting Monday, April 7, at 7 p.m. at Little Bear East Conference Center in St.

Principal of Year Cardwell Honored by Students
     Les Cheneaux Elementary School celebrated "Eric Cardwell Day" February 13, to mark Mr. Cardwell being named Principal of the Year 2007 by the Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association.
