Mackinac State Historic Parks has retained its accreditation by the American Association of Museums, the fourth time it has been granted the prestigious recognition since 1973. Accreditation is held by 774 museums of the estimated 17,500 in the United States. The process reviews the agency's mission, ethics, planning, leadership, staff, collections, education and interpretation, and other areas.

Accreditation, said Mackinac State Historic Parks Director Phil Porter, "provides a seal of approval from the country's most prestigious museum organization."
