Results of 42nd EUP Winter Games
The St. Ignace Sixth Grade girls took home the gold medal in girls basketball. (Photograph courtesy of Abby LaLonde) Students in grades five through 12 at Eastern Upper Peninsula schools competed at the annual Winter Games Saturday, February 23. Students competed in basketball, swimming, bowling, dodgeball, snowboarding, and chess. The results are listed below.
Boys Basketball
In the fifth grade boys basketball Division B, C, and D, played at Rudyard High school in Rudyard, the Sault Ste. Marie St. Mary's team finished first for the gold medal, followed by Cedarville, Rudyard, and Brimley.
In the sixth grade boys basketball Division B and C, at LaSalle High School in St. Ignace, the St. Ignace team finished first for the gold medal, followed by Rudyard and Newberry.
Girls Basketball
In the fifth grade girls basketball Division B and C, played at Rudyard Middle School in Rudyard, the Sault Ste. Marie team finished first for the gold medal, followed by Rudyard, St. Ignace, and Newberry.
In the sixth grade girls basketball Division B and C, played at St. Ignace Middle School in St. Ignace, the St. Ignace team finished first for the gold medal, followed by Newberry and Rudyard.
In Division D, for the fifth and sixth grade girls basketball games, played at DeTour High School, the Bahweting team finished first for the gold medal, followed by Pickford, and DeTour.
Bowling
In the bowling competition at Gateway Lanes of St. Ignace, Jason Brown and John Ellis of St. Ignace took top honors in the elementary boys division, followed by Josh Bristow and Devin Green of Newberry, Ben Goddard and Joshua Kivi of Immanuel Lutheran, Nathan Mackie and Luke Terwilliger of Sault Ste. Marie, and Daniel Postma and Matt Wyers of St. Ignace.
In the elementary girls division, Katherine Doty and Samantha Paradiso of Sault Ste. Marie finished first, followed by Sharman Colegrove and Cameron Huffman of St. Ignace, Alyssa Gravelle and MacKenzie Postma of St. Ignace, and Shannon Sayles and Morgan St. Andrew of Cedarville.
Bryan Colborn and Kyle Rhoads of Sault Ste. Marie finished first in competition among junior high boys, followed by Brandon Claypoole and Christian Reattoir of Immanuel Lutheran, Chris Headley and Trevor McKerchie of Rudyard, and Cyleb Feldman and Wyatt Orm of St. Ignace.
For the junior high girls division, Ashlee Bonnee and Brittni Hall of Rudyard took the gold medal.
Matt Arbic and Carmine Ferraro of Sault Ste. Marie took first place in the high school boys division, followed by Karl DeWitt and Drew Otten of Rudyard, Jacob Bywater and Travis Johnson of Rudyard, and Dan Yoak and Drew Zitnik of Newberry.
In the high school girls division, Kara Bourchard and Miranda Newhouse of Newberry finished first, followed by Stephanie Avery and Kaylee Farrar of Sault Ste. Marie, Lindsey LaPlaunt and Sara Schroyer of Rudyard, and JC Rizzo and Jessica Rynberg of Rudyard.
Chess
Chess competitions took place at Pickford High School.
In the elementary division, the following three St. Ignace players finished first, second, and third: Joe Backlas, Liam Martin, and Cameron Collier.
In the junior high division, Greg Brewster of Sault Ste. Marie took the gold medal, followed by Kasey Bunker of St. Ignace, and Alex Boyer of Sault Ste. Marie.
Dodgeball
The Pickford team finished first in elementary dodgeball action at Cedarville High School, followed by DeTour and Cedarville.
In the junior high division, played at Pickford High School, Rudyard took the gold medal, followed by two St. Ignace teams.
Sault Ste. Marie team took first place in high school dodgeball at Cedarville High School, followed by Rudyard and Newberry.
Snowboarding
Snowboarders competed at Minneapolis Woods Ski Hill in Sault Ste. Marie.
In the elementary boys competition, Noha Talintino of Sault Ste. Marie finished first, followed by Jake Warner of Sault Ste. Marie, and Bailli Widon of Brimley.
Two Sault Ste. Marie students, Dylan Baril and Dan LaFord, finished first and second in the junior high boys competition.
Swimming
Swimmers competed in several divisions at Rudyard High School's Larry Davis Swimming Pool.
Bekah Miller of Cedarville took the gold medal in the elementary girls non-club freestyle competi- tion, followed by Angela Donajkowski of St. Ignace, and Sarah Landreville of Cedarville.
Katelyn Mills of Brimley took the gold medal in the elementary girls club freestyle competition.
Kai Waara of Rudyard took the gold medal in the elementary boys non-club freestyle swim, followed by Jared Fenlon of St. Ignace.
For junior high girls non-club freestyle, Brittany Hedger of Newberry finished first, followed by Alexis Nolan and Mandy Scott, both of Newberry.
For junior high boys non-club freestyle, Josh Nainan of Rudyard finished first.
Taylor Green of Pickford finished first in the elementary girls non-club backstroke, and Zach Wiartella of St. Ignace took the gold medal for the elementary boys.
In junior high girls non-club backstroke competition, Jessica Scott of Newberry took first place, followed by Jennie Bird of St. Ignace, and Abbi Hayes of Newberry.
