Biologists, Sportsmen Outline Cormorant Control Plans
Meetings at St. Ignace, Les Cheneaux Call for Expanded Harassment Efforts
      The double-crested cormorant population in the Les Cheneaux Islands will be reduced this year from 1,000 nesting pairs to 500 and harassment efforts will be expanded to deter cormorant feeding. Volunteers are being sought for the project.

Quilt Project 'Multiplies' Ways To Learn
      Learning multiplication tables can be a daunting task for third grade students. Teacher Pat Shiemke at St. Ignace Elementary School hopes to make the lesson easier and fun by having students make a quilt of numbers to represent the multiplication table. Once the sewing is complete, the quilt will hang on the classroom wall as a reference for the young mathematicians.

Mackinac County Commission Attorneys Advise: County, Hospital Must Agree Before Election
      The Mackinac County Board of Commissioners has directed its attorneys to help them clear up ownership of Mackinac Straits Hospital property, negotiate a guarantee from the Mackinac Straits Hospital Authority that a $1.3 million hospital debt will be paid in full, and help it in the disposition of its Burdette Street hospital property.

Old Tractors To Highlight Straits Show
      Anew antique tractor parade and show is scheduled at the Straits of Mackinac September 12 through September 14, announced Ed Reavie of St. Ignace at the Mackinaw City Village Council meeting Thursday, March 20. Mr. Reavie received the village council's approval to stage vehicles in Mackinaw City before a parade across the Mackinac Bridge.

Wood Siding May Be Saved at Old St. Ignace Museum
      Aging wood siding on the Museum of Ojibwa Culture may not need to be replaced after all, members of the St. Ignace Downtown Development Authority learned March 14 after consulting Frank Pompa, a historic preservationist and Mackinac Island summer resident, who examined the siding and has volunteered to help the city restore the building. Mackinaw City Wants To Protect Waterfront Views
      After months of deliberation, the Mackinaw City Planning Commission is poised to suggest amending a village ordinance to keep some waterfront visible in the B2 district along South Huron Avenue. The amount of space to remain open between buildings, and how to calculate it as developments are proposed, was debated at the Thursday, March 13, planning commission meeting.

Limited Reasons for Closing Public Meetings
      There are only a few circumstances in which public meetings can be closed, and they are strictly defined. The Open Meetings Act allows these few exceptions by law to protect the interests of the public. The reason for closing the meeting must be stated before a board goes into closed session. All decisions by the public body, however, must be made in open session.

Geocaching Spring Fling on Island April 25-26
      The second annual Spring Fling geocaching hunt will take place on Mackinac Island Saturday, April 26, and Sunday, April 27. The outdoor, family hiking adventure of finding caches with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) devices is open to the public, free of charge.
