Saturday, April 8, 1893

We have had some fine sugar weather this week.

In Hendricks township, only 29 votes were polled. Geo. Ryerse was returned as supervisor.

Reported that a man was seen to disappear through the ice between here and the Island Wednesday.

Over 100 ballots were thrown in this county on account of being wrongly marked or not marked at all.

Thursday, April 11, 1918

Sale of intoxicating liquors on all steamers of the Detroit and Cleveland Navigation company will be discontinued on May 1, A.A. Schantz, vice president and general manager of the company, announced Saturday.

The annual meeting of the Civic League will be held in Moose hall on Tuesday afternoon April 16, at 2:30.

The Pickford Clarion, which began publication 12 years ago with E.E. Baldwin as editor-owner, has suspended publication for reasons Mr. Baldwin does not make known in his official announcement.

The Chief Wawatam experienced her first serious trouble with the ice this year Sunday afternoon, being imprisoned from 4:30 until 10:30, when she succeeded in releasing herself. The steamer was coming from Mackinaw on a freight trip when she was caught in a field of ice that broke loose between the south shore and St. Helena island. Train 102 tied up on her arrival here, but everything was again normal Monday morning.

E.L. LaRocque of the Rexall drug store will give a globe and two goldfish with every 50 cent purchase on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of this week. First come gets the choicest fish.

The baseball season opened here Sunday when Moran took Allenville into camp in a wellplayed game.

Mayor A.G. Phillips was victorious in his ninth bid for mayor of St. Ignace in Monday's city election. He carried all four wards of the city and defeated his Republican opponent, Raymond France, 520-388.

One million invitations are being mailed out for the Mackinac Bridge dedication, to be held June 26-28.

The center caisson which supported the loading platform of the Northwestern Oil Terminal company sank in about 22 feet of water Saturday, when drifting ice and high winds toppled the water-tight chamber in outer Moran bay. Officials say that there is enough fuel in the storage tanks to supply the Kinross Air Base until repairs are made.

Former location of the oldest continuing business establishment in St. Ignace and one of the three oldest buildings in the city, the old Walker Furniture Store and Funeral Parlor building is being razed, a victim of progress in our modern world. The property has been purchased by the Arnold Transit Company and Art Huskey has the job of razing the building to make room for additional parking facilities.

Mr. and Mrs. John Ogle, owners

and operators of the Deer Ranch and the Deerskin Corral, popular tourist attractions and souvenir

businesses in the area for many years, announced this week that they have sold their businesses to Tom Harrington, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Harrington of St. Ignace.

Thursday, April 8, 1993

An ordinance setting up a seven-member harbor authority has been approved by the St. Ignace City Council, completing another step in a city takeover of the downtown marina.

Mackinac Island Mayor Margaret Doud won her 19th consecutive term uncontested.

Silver Mountain Ski Hill, west of St. Ignace, remained closed this winter, the fourth ski season in a row that the volunteer-run facility could not open because there was too little snow.
