The grip of winter loosened with the natural break-up of ice in the Straits of Mackinac March 23, when this photograph was taken. Freighters have been crossing under the Mackinac Bridge and through the Straits since the Soo Locks opened March 25. Snowmobilers began crossing the ice bridge between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island February 21, and were seen crossing as late as March 29. Ice continues to float in the Straits at press time, April 15, and impeded ferry travel to Mackinac Island April 11. Jaime Massey, Leonard "Ducky" Nelson, Joe Prout, and John Rickley of St. Ignace use an eager pack of redbone and blue tick coonhounds, and mixes of the two breeds, to hunt predators during the winter months. As their name implies, coonhounds were bred for hunting raccoons and other small game, and were used historically in the south and Appalachian regions. More ...
