Spring Ice Slow To Leave Straits

The grip of winter loosened with the natural break-up of ice in the Straits of Mackinac March 23, when this photograph was taken. Freighters have been crossing under the Mackinac Bridge and through the Straits since the Soo Locks opened March 25. Snowmobilers began crossing the ice bridge between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island February 21, and were seen crossing as late as March 29. Ice continues to float in the Straits at press time, April 15, and impeded ferry travel to Mackinac Island April 11. The Coast Guard reports it must continue icebreaking operations in the Great Lakes, delaying the spring setting of buoys this year. (Related story, page 14.)
