Mealworms, on Your Mark...Get Set...Slow!
Shouts of "Go!" went unheeded, much to the disappointment of St. Ignace Elementary third grade student Eric Ward (left) at a "mealworm race" in his classroom Tuesday, April 15. His mealworm, appropriately named "Slowpoke," went for a leisurely crawl, barely making it off the starting line of the 30- centimeter race track. Chase Kerridge's (second from left) mealworm took the race, reaching the tempting slice of apple first. Also participating are Alysse Bentley (right) and Jazmine Orr. The race was a fun break for students in Pat Shiemke's class, who are studying the life cycle of a mealworm as part of their science curriculum. The young scientists make daily observations of their mealworms, including recording their size, and drew pictures of the future beetle using a magnifying glass. The class next will study the life cycle of butterflies and frogs. |
