With spring's late arrival, the track and golf seasons have begun in earnest. The varsity track team made a good showing at the Marquette Dome Track invitational last week and our first home track meet had our Eagles placing third overall. More ... With the cold, windy weather, last weekend was not the best of weekends for the sand dunes clean-up, but the 30 or so volunteers who gathered persevered and gathered bags of trash off the beaches. Joe Chalmers and Ray Baron were workers representing Trinity Lutheran Church. More ... The Family Fun Afternoon April 26 at Kinross Recreation Center drew 51 adults and 61 children attending. Going from the 70's, a couple of weeks ago, to much lower temperatures this week, including a few snow flurries Saturday evening, wasn't funny. I heard it's not nice to fool Mother Nature, but it's not fair if she fools us, either. More ... Hanna Lupan has returned home after spending a few months in North Carolina with her sister, Liala Evans. Temperatures there ranged in the 50s and 60s. Hanna is happy to be back, and enjoys weekly social activities. Louis Colegrove, president of the Straits Area Sportsmen's Club, reports an attendance of 14 at the group's April 21 meeting. More ... The calendar may be fast approaching May, but the cold temperatures are not indicative of spring. The annual Mother Daughter Banquet, with a theme of "Hats Off to Mom," will be Wednesday, May 7, at the Hiawatha Sportsmans Club activities building. The pussy willow bushes are all fuzzy and many trees are beginning to show a little bit of green. We can once again be proud of the Les Cheneaux Schools' young musicians. More ... A friend brought over a sprig of lilac Saturday. I was surprised and puzzled. The plant cutting came from a greenhouse. Each time I pass this little aromatic sprig on my table, I am reminded how close we are to spring, even as I look outside and it's 34 degrees. Spring is inevitable. More ... The official opening of the season began Friday, April 25, when Grand Hotel's The Gate House and Millennium Wing opened. The popular Horn's Gaslight Bar welcomed Islanders and visitors for an evening of fun and dancing to the music of Tricky Dicky and the Spoonmen. More ...
