Memorial Day Services Announced

Memorial Day, a holiday to commemorate those who died in military service to the United States, will be celebrated in local communities Saturday, May 24, and Monday, May 26. The traditional holiday is the last Monday in May. Services will be at Cedarville, Curtis, Engadine, Mackinac Island, Mackinaw City, Pickford, and St. Ignace. No services are planned in DeTour or Rudyard. Dates and times of services are listed here.

St. Ignace

There will be two Memorial Day services in St. Ignace, and flags will be placed at veterans' graves at the three St. Ignace cemeteries at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 24. LaSalle High School baseball players will assist local veterans in placing the flags.

Memorial Day will be observed for residents of the Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care facility Saturday, May 24, at 1 p.m. by the local Disabled American Veterans (DAV) chapter. The public is welcome.

Memorial Day services will be Monday, May 26, at 10 a.m., at the Mackinac County Courthouse. Billie Clark of the DAV and Mike Lehto, commander of the American Legion, will speak. Veterans of military conflicts since World War II, members of each military branch, and the United States Coast Guard are expected to attend.

Coffee and refreshments for veterans and the public will be served at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall after the ceremony.

Les Cheneaux

The Law-White Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7958 of Hessel and Ladies Auxiliary will be joined by the Pickford American Legion Post 323 as they lead traditional Memorial Day services at Cedar Cemetery on Four-Mile Block Road in Cedarville Monday, May 26, at 11 a.m. Aremembrance wreath, flags, and memorial flowers will be placed at the Veterans Memorial in the center of the cemetery, while VFW and Ladies Auxiliary members will speak.

Cedarville High School Band will perform during the service, and will play military service songs, patriotic music, and "Taps." Representatives of each military service branch are expected to attend, as are veterans of military conflicts since World War II and their families. Cedar Cove Assisted Living Community residents, some of whom are veterans, will attend the services.

Mackinac Island

Interpreter soldiers from Fort Mackinac and members of Mackinac Island's American Legion Post 299 plan observances Monday, May 26.

Fort historical interpreters, dressed in the uniforms of the U.S. Army 23rd Regiment of Infantry that served Fort Mackinac in the 1880s, will march from the north sally port entrance of the fort along Garrison Road to the Post Cemetery, where they will perform a short ceremony and salute. The march begins at 8:30 a.m. and the public is welcome to follow.

At 11:30 a.m., members of American Legion Post 299 of Mackinac Island will conduct a service at the Veterans Memorial in the city park on Market Street. The public is welcome to attend.

Mackinaw City

The Mackinaw City Memorial Day Parade will be Saturday, May 24, at 1 p.m., beginning at Conkling Heritage Park and ending at Colonial Fort Michilimackinac.

Monday, May 26, a 10 a.m. Memorial Day service will take place at the marina park on South Huron Avenue.

Pickford

There will be two Memorial Day services in Pickford.

A remembrance ceremony will take place Sunday, May 25, at Pickford Presbyterian Church's flagpole, immediately following church services. Church services will begin at 10 a.m. and the memorial service is expected to begin around 11 a.m. Names of fallen veterans who were members of the church will be read, and a bell will ring for each departed veteran.

Traditional Memorial Day services will be at the memorial in Glen Gough Memorial Park in Pickford Monday, May 26, at 10 a.m. The American Legion Post 323 of Pickford and Law-White Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary of Hessel will lead services. Pickford Public Schools Band will play patriotic music and "Taps." The public is welcome to attend.

Curtis

Portage Township Memorial Day services will begin at 9:15 a.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery in Curtis, Monday, May 26. The Veterans of Foreign Wars from Germfask will lead services. The public is invited to attend. VFW members will then go to Germfask to conduct 10 a.m. services at the community's cemetery, and Grand Marais, where they will lead an 11:30 a.m. service at the cemetery.

Engadine

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8372 and American Legion Post 290 will lead services Monday, May 26, at 1:30 p.m. at the Mill Pond Park in Engadine. The public is invited to attend.
