John William McNally, 87, of Cedarville, was a World War II veteran who worked for the City of Royal Oak Water Department. Mr. McNally died Monday, May 19, 2008, at Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace.

He was born August 7, 1920, in Royal Oak, to William and Louise Margaret (nee Ross) McNally.

He grew up in Madison Heights. After completing high school, he worked as a landscape gardener. He served in the United States Army during World War II, from 1942 to 1946.

He married Shirley Maxine Peterson July 5, 1947.

Mr. McNally retired from the water department, where he had worked for more than 25 years. He had lived in Cedarville since 1980.

In Madison Heights, he was an active member of the VFW. He was a devoted Detroit Tigers fan.

Mr. McNally is survived by one daughter and her family, Sandra and Steve Tassier of Cedarville; three grandsons and their families, Steve and Heather Tassier Jr., Michael and Kathy Tassier, and David Tassier; and four greatgrandchildren, Dustin Tassier, Sheldon Tassier, Griffin Tassier, and Steven Tassier III. Also surviving are five sisters and their families, Margaret Pulford of Cadillac, Barbara Mason of Clawson, Frances Phegley of California, Catherine Fenner of Utica, and Mary and William Barnard of Rochester Hills.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; one sister, Gertrude McNally; and three brothers, George, Edward, and Charles McNally.

Services were held Thursday, May 22, at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford.

The Reverend Jeffrey Meyers conducted the service. Burial was at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens in Bruce Township.
