McCain, Obama Should Be Pressed on Great Lakes Protection

      If this weather doesn't start cooperating, we may not have many front-porch visitors. Denny Rippett did stop by this past week, only to be run into the house by the mosquitoes, but we did have a nice chat. Jackie Rippett has arrived at the Rippett home, after taking care of things at their other home in Waterford. It's good to have them both back up north.

      This past Wednesday, the last day of school, as kids came flying out of classes ready for summer vacation to begin, all of us parents were already wondering when school is due to start back up. Middle school baseball teams with Consolidated Community School Service began practices last week. This year, boys in sixth through eighth grade will be coached by Chris Kruger.

      Deb Bulloch traveled north for the graduation celebration of her niece, Shauni Rutledge. Brandon Miesch enjoyed family time while celebrating his sister, Tristina Browning's, graduation celebration. Wayne and Barb Riley of Wisconsin settled in for a few days at their home on the far side of Rexton, as did Gerri Maddox, who wintered downstate with her daughter.

      After 110 years and three generations operating Taylor's Hardware, the store in Pickford will close for a final time. Marcia and Dick Taylor are in the closeout phase of selling the stock and building, as they are retiring. They look forward to spending more time with their son, Michael, and grandchildren, who are avid skiers. Mr.

      Very attractive boats have been arriving in our beautiful marina, a sure sign of summer on its way. Walking the boardwalk is a relaxing way to spend free time and capture interesting sights. You can walk to the lighthouse and have a seat.

      Hello, everyone. For Free Fishing Day last weekend, we spent Saturday, June 7, at the Seney Wildlife Refuge for its 19th annual Children's Day. It was another fabulous turnout, with fishing, prizes, and a wonderful fish dinner.

      School is out and students are either working at summer jobs, or looking for one. It is nice to see their smiling faces behind a local counter, waiting tables, working with a construction crew, or mowing lawns. Everybody seems busy, and that's a good thing.

      The rain is welcomed for all who have planted their gardens, and area lawns have never been greener. In spite of the inclement weather, plans for outdoor activities are still on the agenda.       The season of abundance is at hand, when natural beauty can be seen everywhere, which comes with the summer sun. Monday, June 2, was a glorious morning on Mackinac, with brilliant sunshine in a heavenly blue sky. Folks could be seen taking the carriage ride. Drivers could be heard giving the history of our Island.
