      Clark Township seeks public opinion about boathouses, setbacks from water, signs, and rural lot sizes at a Tuesday, June 17 public hearing on the new Clark Township master plan and zoning ordinance. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at the Community Center in Cedarville.

Time To Make the Gardens Grow
Downtown St. Ignace
     Carol Bell (back) of Cedars of Mackinac Landscaping and her crew begin planting this summer's colorful Kiwanis Beach garden, designed with 50 varieties of annual flowers, Wednesday, June 4. Over the winter, Mrs. Bell designs the garden, making it slightly different from the previous year. Calling the group a "hardworking crew," she said the garden would be finished in two days. Digging into the dirt and planting the flowers are (from right) Brittany Dykstra, James Peterson, Margaret Peacock, Ashley Neelis, and Kate Springsteen.

1 Principal To Replace 2
Les Cheneaux Schools
      Les Cheneaux Community Schools will replace an elementary school principal and a high school principal with one principal for both schools. At a special meeting Monday, June 2, trustees said they will take applications through Friday, June 27. The position will begin August 1.

1st Class of Boatbuilders Graduated at Cedarville
      Surrounded by the five boats they built using contemporary and traditional methods, seven members of the first graduating class of the Great Lakes Boat Building School in Cedarville received certificates of completion Friday, June 6. Student Bob Coady of Cedarville was chosen as the class speaker.

Finkel Crowned Island's Lilac Queen
Mackinac Island Lilac Parade Is Sunday at 5 p.m.
      The 59th Annual Lilac Festival opened Friday, June 6, in traditional fashion with the crowning of the Lilac Queen, despite nearby rumbles of thunder and flashes of lightning. The storm avoided Marquette Park, and Mayor Margaret Doud crowned Jane Finkel as the 2008 Lilac Queen.

Marina Gets Fresh Coat of Blue
     St. Ignace Marina workers apply the final coat of blue paint to a dock beam Wednesday, June 4. As weather allowed this spring, Paul Davis (from left), Brad Silet, and Jake Weiss stripped, sanded, and primed the steel beam that helps support the main dock. The project, said Marina Director Gene Elmer, is undertaken every five years.

Plenty of Fishing Fun During Annual Kids Event at Castle Rock Ponds
      Tangled fishing lines, and freed bobbers sailed through the air as young anglers took to the shores of Castle Rock Ponds Saturday, June 7, during the 12th annual Kids Fishing Day. Some parents and grandparents also tried their luck there during the statewide free weekend of fishing.

Retired Cutter Receives $100,000 in Donations
      On a warm summer morning in 2006, village historian Dick Moehl awoke in stateroom 16 of the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw, a ship floating in tranquil retirement near the shore of Mackinaw City. For the next three weeks, the 5,252-ton decommissioned vessel would be his home as he familiarized himself with the boat, in detail.
