During the Cedarville High School commencement ceremonies Sunday, May 25, Principal Randy Schaedig announced scholarship recipients. Twenty-two of the 29 graduates are sharing $33,000 in scholarships this year. Some of the recipients are chosen by the donors, and the rest are selected by the scholarship committee. Two existing scholarships increased their award amount this year, including the John W. Trefry Memorial Scholarship, which doubled to two, $1,000 scholarships, and the Williams Family of Coryell Island Scholarship, which increased from $500 to $750. It is rewarding, Mr. Schaedig said, to see that scholarships have tripled over the last eight years.

Four new scholarships were established this year, including the Les Cheneaux Historical Association Scholarship for a student who has excelled in history courses or plans to major in history, the Les Cheneaux Sportsman's Club Scholarship for a student pursuing post-secondary education, and the American Legion Post 323 Scholarship for a relative of a military veteran pursuing post secondary education. The new Tassier- Nye Scholarship was established by Gary and Ann Tassier, Cedarville residents whose two children received local scholarships that helped them through college.

"It is their wish to pay back the community for their support by creating this scholarship," Mr. Schaedig said.
