Remains Not Identified Yet
Michigan State Police in Cheboygan are still investigating human remains found on the Lake Huron shoreline in Cheboygan County Monday, May 26. An autopsy has been completed in Grand Rapids, but police have not yet identified the remains.
They noted that two male subjects were missing in the Straits of Mackinac area in the past three years.
Charles Rutherford Jr. is still missing from a boating incident August 11, 2005. His companion on a boating trip from the Detroit area to Mackinac Island, Lara Stempien, also went missing then, but her body was recovered from a rocky shoal in Lake Huron a few miles from where the recently discovered remains were found.
The other missing person is Henry Stauffer of Washington, D.C., who was a passenger in an aircraft that crashed in the area August 24, 2007. State Police in St. Ignace were investigating the case, and the remains of the pilot, Karen Dodds, were recovered October 8, 2007, near the Mackinac Bridge.
The remains found last month were discovered by people who own a cabin near the Presque Isle County line, as they were walking on the rocky shoreline in Cheboygan County.
Tests are hoped to reveal the cause of death and the identity of the deceased person, police said.
