Antiques on Bay Draws Best of the Best
      "There's no question, the cream of the crop is here," said automobile judge Lee Ortman of Moran Township, as he perused 82 registered antique vehicles, 30 of them featured convertibles glimmering in the sun Saturday, June 21, at the 12th Annual Antiques on the Bay show in St. Ignace.

Cruise Night Is Thursday; Parade Is Friday
      Wednesday, June 25, a sleek 1994 Dodge Viper Roadster will thunder north on I-75. As it crosses northern Michigan, it will be joined by dozens more. Some from Detroit, others from Chicago, all heading toward the Straits of Mackinac for the 33rd Annual St. Ignace Car Show Thursday, June 26, through Saturday, June 28.

Lighthouse To Become Museum
McGulpin Point
      The old McGulpin Point Lighthouse in Mackinaw City will be restored as a working lighthouse museum following its purchase by Emmet County, approved in a 6-1 vote by the county board Tuesday, June 10. The county will pay $720,000 for the lighthouse and grounds to the Peppler family of Mackinaw City, which has used the structure as a home.

      The St. Ignace News Office will be closing at 1 p.m. Friday, June 27, and will reopen Monday, June 30. The St. Ignace News Office will be closed Friday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day.

      Retired State Senator Walter North of St. Ignace was honored for his unwavering commitment and dedication to the people of this community and all state residents when he was presented with Michigan's 2008 Community Foundation Award for Philanthropy Thursday, June 19.

Mackinaw City Fire Burns One of Oldest Buildings on Central Avenue
      No one was hurt when fire tore through one of the oldest buildings in downtown Mackinaw City Monday, June 23, on East Central Avenue. The fire call went out at 2:30 p.m., said Mackinaw City police officer Bob Desy. A tall plume of black smoke was visible from across the Straits of Mackinac at about 2:45 p.m.

Hospital Board Members Are Recognized
      The Mackinac Straits Hospital Authority held a monthly meeting for the last time Monday, June 16. The hospital will now become a nonprofit, private corporation, managed by Mackinac Straits Health Systems, and the new organization will build the new hospital on North State Street in St. Ignace.
