Theodore Aslin
Theodore "Ted" M. Aslin, 78, of Newberry, was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. Mr. Aslin died Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids.
Born May 27, 1930, in St. Ignace, he was the son of Albert and Frances (nee Smith) Aslin.
Mr. Aslin served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War, attaining the rank of sergeant. Following his honorable discharge, he resided downstate and held various employments until he retired owing to declining health.
He married Irma J. Flemming November 19, 1977.
A resident of Newberry for the past 30 years, he was a member of American Legion Post 74 and life member of VFW Post 8372, both of Newberry, and member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. His hobbies and interests included reading, watching Western movies, and spending time with his family and his companion dog, Ginger.
Survivors include his wife, Irma; four children and their families, Michelle and Tom Gendron of Newberry, David Tryon of Quincy, Ron Tryon of Minnesota, and Michael Tryon of California; grandchildren Matthew and Michelle McMurtrie, Matthew Gendron, and Sandy Tryon; several great-grandchildren, and siblings Doris Allen of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Eva Allen of Wapakoneta, Ohio, and Fred Aslin of Newberry.
Besides his parents, Mr. Aslin was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan McMurtrie, and five siblings, Alberta Chippewa, John Aslin, George Aslin, Peter Aslin, and Violet Aslin.
A Traditional Native American service was held Friday, June 27, at 9 a.m. at Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry.
