John G. Wilson of St. Ignace was a U.S. Army veteran who was decorated for his service in Korea. Mr. Wilson died at age 78 Monday morning, June 30, 2008, at Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace.

He was born in St. Ignace November 5, 1929, to George and Grace Mary (Albright) Wilson.

Following high school graduation, he joined the United States Army. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8372, having served in the United States Army from September 17, 1951, to September 2, 1953, plus eight years of reserve service. For his service in Korea, Mr. Wilson received a Bronze Star, the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, a National Defense Service Medal, and a United Nations Service Medal.

He was a member of the Catholic church.

For a time, Mr. Wilson drove a road commission plow truck. He worked for Floyd Paquin Sr. of St. Ignace in the commercial fishing industry for more than 10 years.

He lived in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for a time. Following the death of his wife, he moved back to St. Ignace to care for his aging mother.

Mr. Wilson is survived by a nephew, Jerry Wilson of Lancaster, California, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Jerome, Gerald, and Donald, and a sister, Marian Derusha.

A graveside service will be held later this year at St. Ignatius Cemetery in St. Ignace, and will be announced when scheduled.
